Description
Agatha June, more commonly known by her designation G-3 or her codename Jun the Swan, is a central member of the Science Ninja Team. Her background is defined by loss and resilience. Orphaned at a very young age, she never knew her parents, who were of mixed Japanese and American heritage. After their deaths, she was taken in by an aunt, but that relative also perished when Jun was still a child. Fleeing the devastation of war, she escaped to the Jupiter Mountains, where she discovered a toddler she named Jinpei. She brought him to the Shirayuki Orphanage, effectively raising him as her younger brother. When Jun turned thirteen, she and Jinpei came under the guardianship of Dr. Nambu, who would later mentor them as members of the Science Ninja Team. In her civilian life, she manages a small establishment known as the Snack J café, a gathering place for the team that also serves as her and Jinpei’s home.
Jun’s personality is a blend of strength, independence, and deep-seated compassion. She is portrayed as a brave and determined young woman who takes her responsibilities seriously, both on and off the battlefield. She is easy-going and fun-loving, with a style that reflects a modern, independent spirit, but this is balanced by a sensitive and caring nature. Her most prominent trait is a powerful, almost maternal protective instinct, which she directs most strongly toward her adopted brother, Jinpei. While typically calm and strategic, she can be sensitive and easily irritated, particularly when teased about her romantic feelings. No matter the danger, she tends to remain composed, relying on her wits and training to strategize a path out of perilous situations.
Jun’s primary motivation is the protection of those she considers family, which includes the entire Science Ninja Team. This drive stems from her own traumatic childhood, having lost her parents and been displaced by war. She is deeply committed to the mission of fighting against the terrorist organization Galactor, viewing it as a necessary duty to prevent others from suffering the same losses she endured. Her personal motivations also include a desire for connection and love, particularly her unspoken hopes for a romantic relationship with her teammate and leader, Ken.
Within the team, Jun serves as the electronics and demolitions expert. Her role involves data analysis and processing, handling hazardous materials, and executing explosive ordnance. She is a key member of the team, contributing not only her technical skills but also providing emotional and moral support. Her civilian job at the Snack J also provides the team with a functional base of operations and a place of respite.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with Jinpei is the most significant, defined by a mix of affectionate care and sibling rivalry; she often relies on him to handle the cooking at the Snack J, as she has little culinary skill herself. Her dynamic with the team leader, Ken Washio, is complex and marked by unrequited romantic feelings. She frequently shows concern for his well-being and becomes frustrated when he remains oblivious or prioritizes the mission over personal matters. This tension is further explored in later series, where she becomes more proactive in trying to prevent his self-sacrificial tendencies. Her rapport with Joe Asakura is another crucial relationship, often characterized by a rivalry or blunt exchanges that help keep her focused. However, her deep empathy for him is revealed in later story arcs when she staunchly defends his humanity after he is transformed into a cyborg.
Across different story continuities, Jun’s character undergoes subtle development. Early series establish her competence and hidden affections, while later iterations, such as in Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, see her role expand. She occasionally serves as team leader and her emotional maturity grows as she becomes more forthright in her care for her teammates, confronting difficult truths and offering crucial emotional support during times of crisis. Spin-off materials and modern comic adaptations continue to highlight her strategic ingenuity and combat prowess, often placing her in solo operations that test her limits and showcase her ability to survive against overwhelming odds.
As the team's demolitions expert, Jun possesses a variety of notable abilities. She is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, with proficiency in martial arts such as karate and aikido. Her primary weapon is a specialized, reinforced yo-yo. This yo-yo can be charged with electricity to detonate like a bomb on impact or be set with a timer. It can also be fitted with various attachments, such as blades or suction cups. For grappling and mobility, she uses the Aurora Ribbon. Her arsenal also includes an energy-beam projector known as the Elenettor, worn as a bracelet. She is an expert in the use of plastique explosives, which she can conceal in unconventional places, such as her shoe heels and lipstick cases. In terms of equipment, she pilots the G-3 mecha, a high-performance motorcycle that can transform into a hover-cycle capable of land, sea, and short-distance flight.
