Description
Pee-wee, designated G-4, is the name used for the youngest member of the Science Ninja Team in the anime Gatchaman, where he is known in the original Japanese version as Jinpei and carries the codename the Swallow. He is a boy of roughly ten or eleven years old, making him the junior member of the five-person team by a considerable margin, and he serves as the group's reconnaissance expert.
His background is marked by mystery. Jinpei never knew his birth parents or his early history, and nothing about his true name or origin is established with certainty. As an infant he was found by Jun, the team's female member, at the base of Mount Jupiter, and she gave him a name, assigned him a birthday, and adopted him as her younger brother. Because of this he claims to be the last descendant of a ninja clan, although this ancestry is never fully confirmed. In civilian life the two siblings live together and run a small establishment called the Snack J, where Jinpei works as a waiter, cook, bartender, and dishwasher.
In personality, Pee-wee is cheerful, excitable, and mischievous in the manner of a typical child his age, with a fondness for jokes and bad puns. He is also bright and occasionally obnoxious, and he has a habit of bringing home stray animals, much to his sister's frustration. Beneath this playful exterior, however, he is dependable and responsible. He takes his duties at the Snack J seriously, supports his teammates to the best of his ability whenever they need him, and is regarded as the idea man of the team, often contributing clever suggestions during missions. He also serves as a source of comic relief, frequently pairing with Ryu, the team's pilot, for humorous exchanges.
His motivations center on family and loyalty. Having been taken in by Jun and raised among the team, he considers the other members of the Science Ninja Team his family, and his desire to protect them and support their cause drives his willingness to take on dangerous missions despite his youth.
In combat, Pee-wee is a trained practitioner of the Science Ninja Technique, the specialized martial art developed for the team, and his training grants him heightened agility, speed, reflexes, and sensory awareness. His battle uniform is modeled on a swallow and includes wing-like elements that allow him to glide through the air. His signature attack generates a powerful tornado around his body, which can be used to disorient or damage enemies and can even be combined with the abilities of his teammates to create a larger cyclone. His personal arsenal includes bolos that can be fitted with blades or explosives and feathered throwing weapons shaped like shuriken. When in his civilian form he drives a small dune buggy that transforms into an armed helicopter-like vehicle equipped with bombs, nets, slingshots, drills, and cutting wheels for use in the field.
Over the course of the story, Pee-wee balances his childish impulsiveness with a growing sense of duty, and his dependable side emerges whenever his family, especially his sister Jun, is in need of help. He remains the lighthearted heart of the team, but also a capable and inventive fighter whose youth never prevents him from pulling his weight in battle.
