TV-Series
Description
Keyop, designated G-4, is the youngest member of the Science Ninja Team. In the original Japanese version of the series, his name is Jinpei, and he is the team’s reconnaissance expert. His backstory is rooted in tragedy, as he never knew his parents. As an infant, he was found in the mountains by a girl named Jun, who took him back to the orphanage where she lived. The two eventually came under the care of Dr. Nambu, who trained them to become members of the Science Ninja Team. While Dr. Nambu initially did not intend to take both children, Jun insisted that they not be separated, solidifying their bond as adoptive siblings.
In the English-language adaptation Battle of the Planets, Keyop’s origin was significantly altered. In this version, he was reimagined as a genetically engineered clone child, created from a single embryonic cell. To emphasize his artificial nature and add a quirky sci-fi element, this adaptation gave Keyop an unusual speech impediment. He often speaks with a stutter, makes whirring noises, and can only stammer out a few words at a time. This portrayal differs from the original character, who, as a human child, did not have such a verbal tic.
Regardless of the version, Keyop’s personality is defined by a blend of boyish energy and surprising responsibility. He is cheerful, excitable, and mischievous, much like any child his age. However, he is also shown to be dependable, helping Jun run her snack bar and supporting his teammates to the best of his abilities. He possesses a strong emotional core and is sensitive, particularly when it comes to animals. This is notably demonstrated in a mission involving a whale, where Keyop shows great compassion and sheds tears when a baby whale is left orphaned. His youth sometimes leads others to underestimate him, and as a result, he is often driven by a desire to prove himself and show that he is a capable and valuable member of the team.
Keyop’s role on the team is that of the youngest member and a specialist in infiltration and incapacitation. Because his small stature puts him at a disadvantage in direct combat, his fighting style focuses on stealth and using specialized tools to restrain or disable enemies. His primary weapon is a set of bolas, which he uses with great accuracy to tie up opponents. In later series, he also uses weapons like the Rebound Ball and the Swallow Top. For reconnaissance, he pilots the Swallow Helico, a small VTOL aircraft designed for missions in areas inaccessible to the team’s main ship, the God Phoenix.
His relationships with the other teammates are central to his character. He shares an incredibly close sibling bond with Jun, whom he considers his sister. He helps her at her job and enjoys teasing her about her romantic feelings for the team leader, Ken. He holds Ken in high regard, referring to him as aniki, a Japanese term for an older brother or respected elder. He follows Ken’s orders without hesitation. He is also close with the rest of the team, embracing them as his family. The team members, especially Jun, act as protective older siblings and parental figures, watching over him closely during missions and in their daily lives.
