TV-Series
Description
Princess, designated G-3 of the Science Ninja Team in the anime Gatchaman, is the same character known in the original Japanese version as Jun the Swan. In English-language adaptations she has also been called Agatha June, and in the original Japanese series she carries the bird code name of the Swan. She is the only female member of the five-person team and brings to it a combination of technical skill, combat training, and a strong sense of family.
Her background begins in an orphanage, where she grew up as a Japanese-American girl without a family of her own. Dr. Nambu, the scientist who assembles the team, recruited her to serve as its technical expert. She agreed to join only on the condition that young Jinpei, a boy she had effectively adopted as her younger brother, be recruited as well. In her civilian life she runs a bar and coffee shop called the Snack J, which serves as the team's gathering place and as the home she shares with Jinpei. She also works occasionally as a dancer at her own establishment, plays guitar in a small band, and enjoys riding motorcycles in her free time.
In personality, Princess is strong-willed, independent, and easy-going, with a sensitive and nurturing side. She takes her duties as a member of the team very seriously and tries to look out for the others, whom she considers the family she never had as a child. By the standards of the era in which the series was produced, she is portrayed as a modern young woman who is fully capable of taking care of herself. As the only female member of a team that operates in a largely male-dominated environment, she often lets the others take the lead, even though she is a capable fighter and the group's most technically minded member.
Her motivations center on protecting the Earth from the Galactor organization and, just as strongly, on protecting her teammates. Her insistence on bringing Jinpei into the team and raising him as her brother reflects her desire to build the family she was denied in the orphanage. That loyalty also shapes her place in the story, where she serves as both the team's combat support and its emotional anchor.
Her role on the team is that of electronics and demolitions specialist. She handles communications, computers, data analysis, explosives, and hazardous materials, and she also acts as medic and engineer for the group. In battle formations, she is part of the top tier of the Whirlwind pyramid, a technique in which the team spins at high speed to generate a devastating tornado.
Her key relationships are with the other members of the team. She has romantic feelings for Ken, the team leader, while also being drawn to Joe, the second-in-command, and this tension becomes more noticeable in the sequel series Gatchaman II. Her closest bond is with Jinpei, toward whom she acts as a maternal figure. She is a dependable teammate to Ryu, the team's pilot, and respects Dr. Nambu as the mentor who gave her a purpose. Over the course of the original series and its sequels, she develops from an orphaned outsider into a confident and devoted member of the team, and her balancing of independence with care for others remains central to her character.
Her notable abilities come from her training and her swan-themed equipment. She possesses enhanced strength and agility, can glide through the air using her wing-like costume, and is a skilled martial artist. Her signature weapons include a high-tech yo-yo fitted with blades and explosives, razor-sharp ribbons, feather-shaped shuriken, and a sonic gun. Her signature technique is the Tornado, in which she spins rapidly to create a cyclone that can also be combined with the similar attacks of her teammates to form a single powerful storm. She rides a powerful motorcycle that transforms into a high-tech hover vehicle capable of traveling over water and short distances through the air, and she wears a wrist device that allows her to transform into her combat uniform. She is physically described as a young woman with brown hair and brown eyes, about five feet seven inches tall, and she carries herself with the poise and confidence expected of a highly trained ninja operative.
