Description
Ace Goodheart, designated G-1, is the leader of the five-member team known as G-Force in the English-language adaptation of the anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. This character is the Americanized counterpart of the original Japanese hero Ken Washio, also known as Ken the Eagle. The name Ace Goodheart was created for the 1986 version, G-Force: Guardians of Space, to distinguish it from previous English adaptations.

In his civilian identity, Ace Goodheart works as an aircraft test pilot and an airmail delivery courier, living in a small dwelling beside a private airstrip that was left to him by his father. He was orphaned at a young age; his father disappeared in an assumed plane crash during Ace's early childhood, and his mother died of an illness when he was eleven. Following these tragedies, he was taken in and raised by a scientist named Dr. Nambu, who became his guardian and mentor. Ace began his training to become a member of G-Force at the age of thirteen.

Ace is generally a calm, collected, and strategic thinker who serves as the team's primary tactician. He possesses a strong sense of justice and is deeply dedicated to his duty of protecting the Earth from the terrorist organization known as Galactor. However, when faced with extreme personal crises, he can become swept up in his emotions, losing his usual composure and requiring the support of his teammates to recover. One of his defining traits is his struggle with financial responsibility, as he frequently accumulates unpaid debts, particularly at a snack bar run by a fellow team member. In his spare time, he is an avid reader. He is also socially awkward in romantic situations and largely avoids personal relationships, remaining largely unaware of the romantic interest another teammate has in him for much of the series.

A central motivation for Ace is his quest for the truth about his missing father, which is intertwined with the battle against Galactor. Unbeknownst to him for a long time, his father survived the plane crash to go undercover within the enemy organization as a pilot known as Red Impulse. A pivotal moment in his development occurs when he finally reunites with his father, only to witness him sacrifice his own life to destroy a powerful Galactor weapon. This traumatic loss plunges Ace into a period of depression and intense, reckless anger, which temporarily alienates him from his team before he emerges with a hardened resolve against evil.

As the leader of G-Force, Ace coordinates the team's actions during combat and piloting missions. His key relationships include his complex bond with the second-in-command, whose aggressive and pragmatic nature often clashes with Ace's more measured approach, though they share a deep mutual respect and trust akin to brothers. He also shares a significant bond with the team's sole female member, whose professional support he values and whose romantic feelings he eventually begins to reciprocate as the story progresses. Dr. Nambu serves as a crucial father figure and mentor who trained him from childhood. In later sequels, Ace suffers from cellular degeneration due to the immense power of a new team mecha, which further contributes to his increasingly bitter and self-sacrificing demeanor as the fight against Galactor intensifies.

Ace Goodheart is a highly proficient combatant and pilot. He is a master of multiple martial arts disciplines, including judo, karate, and aikido, which he integrates into his acrobatic fighting style. As the son of a legendary pilot, he is also an expert aviator, flying his own personal jet which serves as his primary transport and can combine with the team's larger aircraft, the Phoenix. His signature weapon is the Birdrang, a powerful, razor-sharp, rocket-propelled boomerang. In later series, he also wields a high-frequency sword called the Gatchaman Fencer. His uniform is a white, bird-like battle suit with a feathered cape, a red-and-black helmet, and a blue visor patterned after an eagle's beak.
