Description
Jun the Swan, designated G-3, is a central member of the Science Ninja Team, serving as its electronics and demolitions expert. Her bird motif is the swan, which is reflected in the design of her uniform. In her civilian life, she manages a small café called the Snack J, which functions as both her home and the team's primary gathering place, which she shares with her younger adopted brother, Jinpei.
Jun's background is marked by loss. Orphaned at a young age, she never knew her parents, who were of Japanese and American heritage. After being raised in the Shirayuki Orphanage under the care of the United Nations, she and Jinpei came under the guardianship of Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, the team's mentor. It was Jun who discovered Jinpei as an abandoned infant in the mountains and gave him his name, taking on the role of his older sister and primary caretaker from a very young age. Later adaptations offer alternate backstories; for example, the 1994 original video animation (OVA) portrays her parents as victims of nuclear terrorism, leading her to a brief period in a motorcycle gang for protection before being recruited.
Personality-wise, Jun is defined by her bravery, fierce independence, and a strong sense of responsibility. She takes her duties as a ninja seriously and is always looking out for the well-being of her teammates, particularly Jinpei, toward whom she displays a distinctly maternal and protective instinct. Despite her serious side, she has a fun-loving nature and enjoys riding her motorcycle in her free time. She handles stress well, maintaining a calm and strategic demeanor during dangerous missions, and her fighting style is agile, incorporating high kicks and martial arts techniques like karate and aikido. In some continuations, such as the OVA, her past trauma makes her more emotionally withdrawn and resistant to romantic involvement.
Her primary motivation is to protect others and defeat the criminal organization Galactor. As a core member of the team, she brings essential technical and combat skills to every operation. While her official role is that of a demolitions expert, she is also highly capable in data analysis and electronics. She participates in the team's ultimate combined attack, the Whirlwind Pyramid, alongside her four comrades.
Key relationships shape much of her personal story. Her bond with Jinpei is central; she raised him as her brother, and they share a home and workplace, their deep affection often surfacing in sibling-like arguments and teasing. Her relationship with team leader Ken Washio (G-1) is more complex. Jun develops romantic feelings for Ken, frequently showing concern for him and becoming frustrated when his dedication to the mission blinds him to her affections. Jinpei often teases her about this, and by the events of Gatchaman Fighter, her concern becomes more overt as she actively tries to prevent his self-sacrificing battle tendencies, with hints that her feelings might eventually be reciprocated, though their duties to the team remain paramount. Her dynamic with Joe Asakura (G-2) is also notable; while he can be blunt with her, she staunchly defends his humanity after he is transformed into a cyborg in Gatchaman II.
Jun's character shows notable development across different series. In the original, she is a capable but often emotionally vulnerable young woman coping with unrequited love. By Gatchaman Fighter, she becomes more assertive, both in combat and in her interactions with Ken, actively confronting him about his reckless behavior. The OVA version explores a grittier, more hardened Jun shaped by personal trauma, highlighting her resilience and self-reliance.
Jun possesses a diverse and inventive array of abilities and equipment. Her signature weapon is a reinforced yo-yo, which she wields with unerring accuracy. It can be used as a blunt-force flail or whip and contains explosives that can be detonated on contact or via a timer. In the OVA, the yo-yo's string is electrified. She also uses a variety of disguised explosives, including plastic explosives hidden in the heel of her shoe and bombs concealed in lipstick tubes or designed to look like a teddy bear's head. In later series, her weapons evolve to include the Aurora Ribbon (a grappling whip) in Gatchaman II and the Elenettor (an energy-beam firing bracelet) in Gatchaman Fighter. Jun is also an expert motorcycle rider, piloting a series of advanced vehicles that serve as her personal mecha, such as the Auto Swan motorcycle and the Gatcha Three jet vehicle, which can combine with the others to form the larger Gatchaspartan warship. When she transforms into her Bird Style by activating her wrist bracelet, she dons a distinctive pink uniform with a swan-like helmet and a cape, which grants her the ability to glide through the air.
