Description
Joe Asakura, known as G-2 or Joe the Condor, serves as the second-in-command, marksman, and weapons expert for the Science Ninja Team. His codename reflects his bird style, which is based on the condor. Born George Asakura on BC Island to parents Giuseppe and Caterina, his early life was shattered at the age of eight when his parents were assassinated. His parents were high-ranking members of the villainous organization Galactor who were attempting to defect, a truth initially hidden from him. Joe was rescued by Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, who faked the boy's death by certifying him as deceased to the local government and arranging a casket burial filled only with rocks. Nambu renamed the boy Joe to protect him from Galactor and took him in as a ward. He was later trained alongside other young wards, including the future team leader Ken Washio, honing the Science Ninja techniques that would define his abilities.
In personality, Joe is headstrong, cynical, and impulsive, contrasting sharply with the more restrained and rational Ken Washio. He possesses a shoot first, ask questions later mentality and is always ready for a fight, often preferring to launch an assault rather than negotiate. Despite his tough exterior and tendency to live as a loner, often in a camping trailer, he is genuinely loyal to the team and values his place among them. His primary motivation is a deep-seated thirst for revenge against Galactor for the murder of his parents. This vendetta fuels his dedication to the mission to the point of self-destruction. As the series progresses, he recalls the full memory of his parents' defection, which slightly mellows his worldview and allows him to sympathize with those trapped in Galactor by family ties, though it never diminishes his resolve.
Joe's role in the story is that of the team's aggressive edge. As the weapons specialist, he is the chief gunner for the team's mecha, the God Phoenix, and is often the one to fire its missiles at the first sign of a threat. His combat style is direct and ferocious, favoring overwhelming force. He is an expert marksman with a variety of firearms and is particularly skilled with throwing weapons, making the use of feather shurikens his trademark. His standard equipment includes a versatile grappling-hook pistol that can fire bullets, deploy a lasso, or function as a drill. He possesses superhuman combat abilities through the Science Ninja Arts, granting him feats such as running and flying at high speeds, enhanced leaping, and silent movement. His personal vehicle, the G-2, is a high-performance race car that can transform for combat and dock with the God Phoenix. His cover occupation is that of a private race car driver, which allows him to travel freely and maintain his independently wealthy, lone-wolf persona.
Key relationships define much of his personal journey. His bond with leader Ken Washio is one of rivalry and deep mutual respect; the two frequently clash over strategy, yet they share an unspoken bond forged by their shared childhood and the burdens of their mission. Ken helps Joe recover his repressed memories, and their arguments often stem from Ken's concern for Joe's reckless behavior. He shares a complex relationship with Dr. Nambu, who acts as a father figure, tolerates Joe's temper out of guilt, and trained him for combat. While Joe is often a magnet for disaster in romance, his tragic relationships, often with women affiliated with Galactor, reinforce his isolation and drive.
Joe undergoes significant development throughout the series, marked by both physical sacrifice and existential crisis. In the original series, he suffers incurable brain damage from a shrapnel wound, which causes him debilitating pain and dizziness. Knowing he is living on borrowed time, he becomes even more reckless, eventually sacrificing himself during the final assault on Galactor's base to expose its location. Although presumed dead, his body is never recovered. In the sequel series, he returns as a cyborg, rebuilt by a former Galactor scientist, Dr. Raphael, who saved his life by converting him into a machine. This transformation cures his brain injury but leaves him feeling dehumanized, viewing himself as a living weapon. His new mechanical body grants him enhanced strength and durability but comes with limitations, such as needing to recharge and having a bomb implanted near his heart, which prevents him from carrying out a suicidal attack on the enemy leader, X. This evolution from a human driven by revenge to a cyborg struggling with his own humanity adds layers to his already tragic character, as he continues to fight for his team despite feeling like he has lost part of himself.
