TV-Series
Description
Jinpei, designated G-4 and known as the Swallow, serves as the reconnaissance expert for the Science Ninja Team. He is the youngest member of the group, approximately ten to eleven years old during the original series and around thirteen in the sequel Gatchaman II. His physical appearance is marked by brown hair and dark eyes, with a height of approximately 120 centimeters and a weight of around 30 kilograms.
Jinpei’s origins are rooted in mystery and happenstance. He was discovered as a toddler in the Jupiter Mountains by his future teammate, Jun, who was fleeing the aftermath of a war that had claimed her own parents. Jun brought him to the Shirayuki Orphanage, where she raised him as her adoptive brother, even giving him his name and designating the day she found him as his birthday, as his true birth date remains unknown. Jinpei sometimes claims to be the last descendant of the Iga or Jupiter Ninja clans, a boast that is never confirmed. An implication exists that he might be the sole surviving son of the Jupiter Ninja Clan’s sensei, who disappeared around the time Jun found him, but this connection is never explored. Dr. Nambu initially sought to recruit only Jinpei for the team, drawn by the child's agility and mischievous nature, but Jun insisted they not be separated, securing her own inclusion.
Off-duty, Jinpei lives above and works at Snack J, the establishment run by Jun, where he helps with cooking, waiting tables, and washing dishes. In civilian life, he typically wears an orange-and-yellow T-shirt marked with the number four and blue-and-white striped bellbottom pants, an outfit that is later updated to include a cap and suspenders. His Swallow-themed Bird Style uniform is primarily yellow with red gloves and boots, accented by a dark blue cape in the original series. In the 1994 OVA, this design shifts to a primarily red uniform with yellow accents and a purple cape.
Jinpei’s personality is a blend of cheerful mischief and surprising responsibility. He is excitable, prone to playing pranks, and serves as a source of comic relief alongside the team’s pilot, Ryu. Despite his youthful antics, he demonstrates a solid work ethic through his duties at Snack J and is steadfast in supporting his teammates during missions. A core motivation for Jinpei is his desire to prove his worth; he often feels insecure due to his age and small stature, which leads him to be boastful or occasionally run off on solo missions to show he can handle his share of the load. He has a known weakness for bringing home stray animals, including seals and mountain lion kittens, much to Jun’s dismay.
His key relationships define his place within the team. His closest bond is with Jun, whom he loves as a sister, often teasing her about her feelings for their leader but looking to her for comfort in times of trouble. He views Ken Washio as an older brother, addressing him with the honorific "Aniki" and deeply respecting his leadership, though he also nags Ken about his unpaid snack bar tab. He shares a comedic partnership with Ryu, and considers Dr. Nambu a father figure and even Olga Riddenbacher a mother figure. Across the sequels, Jinpei shows clear development, both in his slightly older appearance and in the sophistication of his arsenal, though his core energetic and loyal personality remains unchanged.
As the reconnaissance expert, Jinpei’s fighting style emphasizes stealth and incapacitation to compensate for his stature. His signature weapons evolve across the series. In the original, he uses American Clackers, which are bolas that can be fitted with blades or explosives. In Gatchaman II, he wields a Rebound Ball, a super-ball projectile thrown from a mitt, and in Gatchaman Fighter, he uses the Swallow Top, a spinning top attached to a string. In the 1994 OVA, his role is modernized, and he is depicted as a skilled hacker who uses an unnamed hacking device with a collapsible screen and gamepad interface that syncs data to his helmet visor. For transportation, he pilots the Swallow Helico, a small VTOL reconnaissance aircraft, and in later sequels, the Gatcha Four tank, which forms part of the combined mecha Gatcha Spartan.
