TV-Series
Description
Ken the Eagle, also known as G-1 and by his civilian name Ken Washio, serves as the leader and primary tactician of the Science Ninja Team. In some adaptations and localizations, he is referred to as As Corazón Noble, though Ken the Eagle remains his most recognized designation. His bird style and team role are modeled after the eagle, a symbol of keen vision and leadership.
Ken's background is marked by profound loss and a mysterious legacy. He grew up believing his father, Kentaro Washio, perished in a plane crash during Ken's early childhood. This belief was reinforced when his mother died of an illness when Ken was eleven, leaving him a complete orphan. Following her death, Dr. Nambu, the team's mentor and the head of the International Science Organization, took Ken in. Beginning at age thirteen, Ken underwent rigorous training to become a Science Ninja. To maintain his cover while conducting missions, he works as an aircraft test pilot and an airmail delivery operative, living in his late father's modest office on a small airfield.
In terms of personality, Ken typically presents a calm and collected exterior, approaching problems with strategic thinking. He is an avid reader, having inherited his father's collection of books, and finds genuine happiness when flying alone. However, this composed surface masks a more complex inner world. He can become emotionally swept up in a crisis, particularly when the stakes are personal, and may require the support of his team to find his balance again. Ken is surprisingly careless with personal finances, frequently neglecting to pay his tab at the team's local meeting spot, Snack Jun, and often relying on the youngest member, Jinpei, to cover for him. He is also notably inept at romance, largely ignoring or misunderstanding the affections of his teammate Jun, possibly due to his intense focus on his duties. Despite his popularity with women, he struggles to express his feelings and generally avoids romantic entanglements. His martial arts prowess is extensive, holding ranks in judo and karate, and he is also proficient in kendo, aikido, kickboxing, and boxing.
Ken's primary motivation is to restore peace to the world by dismantling the terrorist organization Galactor. This noble goal is intertwined with a deep personal quest to uncover the truth about his father. His relationship with his father is the most significant emotional driver in his life. He idolized his father as a child, aspiring to be like him, but carried the pain of presumed abandonment for years. The shocking revelation that his father did not die but instead faked his death to infiltrate Galactor as the mysterious Red Impulse becomes a turning point. Their reunion is tragically brief, as Red Impulse sacrifices his own life to destroy a Galactor missile immediately after revealing his identity to Ken. This loss plunges Ken into a deep depression and a reckless quest for revenge, causing him to briefly become more abrasive and estranged from his team before he regains his resolve.
His key relationships within the team are central to his development. His dynamic with Joe Asakura, G-2 the Condor, is one of constant but respectful rivalry. They often clash due to their opposing approaches, with Ken's rational nature contrasting Joe's hot-blooded impulsiveness. Despite this friction, they share a profound bond as brothers-in-arms, and Ken regards Joe as one of his closest friends and most trusted allies. Ken helped Joe recover repressed memories of his parents' tragic deaths and never judged him for their connection to Galactor. The burden of leadership weighs heavily on him, especially when faced with Joe's declining health and eventual apparent death. With Jun the Swan, G-3, he shares a deep professional respect and a close friendship, remaining largely oblivious to her romantic feelings for him throughout much of the series. Dr. Nambu serves as a father figure and mentor, having raised and trained Ken, though Ken is not afraid to defy Nambu's orders when he believes his own moral compass dictates a different course of action.
Ken's role in the story is that of the quintessential hero and field leader. He coordinates the team's attacks, pilots his own fighter craft which can dock with the team's super-ship, the God Phoenix, and is often the one to land the decisive blow against Galactor's monsters and mecha. As the series progresses, Ken's character develops significantly. He begins as a somewhat archetypal hero but grows more complex and cynical, particularly after his father's death. In later series like Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, Ken's physical condition deteriorates due to radiation exposure from using a powerful technique called the Hypershoot with the team's mecha, Gatchaspartan. This leads to cellular destruction, a wasting illness that adds a layer of tragic vulnerability to his character as he continues to fight despite his failing body. His goal after the war is to become an officer in the ISO, seeking a new purpose once his duty as a warrior is complete.
Ken the Eagle possesses a wide array of notable abilities. As an ace pilot, his skills are inherited from his father, and he is adept at both aerial combat and operating his transformable jet. His primary weapons include the Birdrang, an eagle-shaped, razor-edged boomerang with rocket-propulsion capabilities. He also utilizes feather shuriken and, in later series, a powerful sword called the Gatchaman Fencer. His fighting style, known as Science Ninja Technique, incorporates high-speed agility, martial arts, and specialized maneuvers. These include the Bird Flash, which releases blinding light to disorient foes, and a high-speed illusion technique called Kage No Bunshin that creates holographic copies of himself. As the tactical leader, he is responsible for coordinating the team's ultimate attack, the Tornado Fighter, where all five members combine their vehicles to form a devastating cyclone.
