Description
Anne Halford is a fifteen-year-old candy craftswoman determined to become a Silver Sugar Master, honoring her late mother Emma Halford's legacy. Emma taught Anne the art of refining silver sugar and crafting sugar confections during their travels through the Kingdom of Highland, instilling a deep respect for fairies as victims of human oppression. Following her mother's death on her fifteenth birthday, Anne embarked on a journey to Lewiston to compete in the Royal Candy Fair, aiming to win the prestigious title and create a sugar confection for the Day of Pure Souls in her mother's memory.

Small and slender for her age, Anne possesses strawberry blonde hair often tied in loops with lavender ribbons and distinctive red eyes with orange accents. She typically wears a short-sleeved pink dress with a laced leather corset and brown ribboned flats, an appearance that leads some to derisively call her a "scarecrow."

Anne combines fierce determination with kindness and idealism. She believes in treating fairies as equals, challenging societal norms that permit their enslavement through wing removal. This conviction creates internal conflict when she purchases the obsidian warrior fairy Challe Fen Challe for protection on her journey, promising to free him upon reaching Lewiston. Her empathy drives her to save the water fairy Mithril Lid Pod from a fairy hunter, demonstrating her willingness to intervene against cruelty despite personal risk.

Her journey confronts pervasive misogyny within the male-dominated sugar artistry field. Male artisans frequently dismiss her skills, accuse her of gaining advantages through manipulation or theft, and actively sabotage her work. Her former acquaintance Jonas Under initially presents himself as a suitor but later steals her sugar sculpture for the competition and attempts to have her killed; Anne confronts him with a decisive slap after his sabotage is exposed.

Anne's technical skills evolve through trials. A commission for Duke Alburn to sculpt his lost fairy lover, Christina, showcases her keen observation; she deduces Christina's free status from overlooked details in portraits showing dual wings. She successfully crafts the sculpture, earning payment and recognition. Later, she loses her sugar crafting abilities after a magical intervention saves her life but perseveres to relearn her art from scratch with Elliot Collins's help at the Paige Workshop.

Anne's relationship with Challe deepens into mutual love, facing significant obstacles. After she wins the Silver Sugar Master title, Challe sacrifices his freedom by giving his wing to Bridget Paige in exchange for testimony clearing Anne of sabotage accusations. Anne then works tirelessly at the Paige Workshop to win back Challe's freedom, culminating in a successful church festival project. Following Challe's return, they marry and establish a home near a sugar apple orchard, where Anne plans to create a workshop welcoming both humans and fairies.

Her character arc reflects themes of resilience against oppression, consistently challenging societal injustices while navigating personal moral complexities, such as her initial participation in fairy enslavement. She achieves her dream of becoming a Silver Sugar Master and builds a life aligned with her ideals of equality and artistic expression.
