Description
Great Samurai Tochirō, also known as Tochiro Oyama, is an engineer of remarkable genius. Of short stature and stout build, he stands 153 centimeters tall and is easily recognized by his large, round glasses. He walks with a slightly bow-legged gait and has a hearty appetite. In Cosmo Warrior Zero, he is still in his physical, living body, and he resides in the lawless frontier region of space. He is a gentle and even-tempered individual, often displaying a playful and easygoing nature, though he is known to have poor hygiene and an appreciation for alcohol. Despite his unassuming and sometimes disheveled appearance, he is a Great Samurai, a title that reflects his hidden but formidable capabilities as a warrior.

His primary role in the story comes from his legendary status as an engineer and his deep connections to other key figures in the Leijiverse. He is the genius co-designer of the legendary space battleship Arcadia, a vessel that incorporates the experimental Spiritual Zone Center, which allows it to meld with a pilot's consciousness. He has also forged powerful weaponry, including the Cosmo Dragoon handgun and the Gravity Saber. In Cosmo Warrior Zero, his presence places him at the heart of clashes between space pirates and bounty hunters, particularly as he safeguards a laboratory on a remote mushroom-shaped planet to honor a promise, an act that underscores his dedication to honor and technological preservation.

Key relationships define much of Tochirō's story. His profound bond is with Captain Harlock, to whom he is a best friend and technological partner. He sustains Harlock's missions through his engineering brilliance, and their friendship is one of mutual respect and shared philosophical discussions on freedom. After his physical death, which occurs in other parts of the broader narrative, his consciousness fuses with the Arcadia to guide it as an emergency system. He also shares a significant and initially strained romance with the formidable space pirate Queen Emeraldas, which evolves into mutual respect and deep love, resulting in the birth of their daughter, Mayu. In Cosmo Warrior Zero, he becomes a part of Emeraldas's crew.

While his poor eyesight limits his effectiveness in long-range combat, Tochirō is a master of close-quarters fighting, particularly with his own creation, the Gravity Saber, a weapon with which he is said to rival even Emeraldas in skill. His true power, however, lies in his mind. His abilities as an engineer are unparalleled; beyond the Arcadia, he designed habitable asteroid environments, the Cosmo Dragoon, and the Gravity Saber. His journey often shows a character whose playful and sometimes slovenly exterior belies a man of unwavering principle, technical genius, and hidden martial prowess, whose legacy lives on long after his physical form is gone.
