Description
Cybersix is the protagonist of the 1999 anime series of the same name. She is a genetically engineered humanoid, one of 5,000 beings created by the sinister scientist Dr. Von Reichter in his laboratory hidden somewhere in the South American jungle. Designated as number six, as marked by a tattoo on her arm, she was intended to be a perfect servant or super-soldier. However, she and her siblings developed free will and human-like emotions, which their creator saw as a defect. This led Von Reichter to order the destruction of the entire Cyber series. Cybersix managed to escape this purge, fleeing to the fictional, gothic city of Meridiana to start a new life.
To survive in human society and hide from her creator, Cybersix assumes a male identity. She takes the name Adrian Seidelman, a young man who died in an accident, and works as a literature teacher at a local high school. By day, she lives quietly as Adrian, but by night, she dons a distinctive costume consisting of a black bodysuit, high-heeled boots, a flowing black cape with a red lining, and a broad-brimmed hat to become the vigilante Cybersix. Her dual existence is a core part of her struggle, as she navigates the worlds of academia and superheroics while keeping her true nature a secret.
Personality-wise, Cybersix is initially portrayed as a solitary and serious individual, shaped by the trauma of her origins and her escape from Von Reichter. She is driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the people of Meridiana from the threats posed by her creator. Despite her formidable abilities, she is deeply introspective and wrestles with profound questions about her own humanity. She often questions whether she, as an artificial being, is capable of experiencing genuine human emotions like love. This internal conflict gives her a melancholic and compassionate edge, as she sees her own struggle reflected in other beings like herself. Her survival depends on a mysterious, life-giving fluid called sustenance, a need that forces her to hunt down and destroy other creatures of Von Reichter's making, such as the monstrous Fixed Ideas and Technos, to take their sustenance for herself.
In the story, Cybersix serves as the primary force of good opposing Von Reichter's evil schemes to take over Meridiana. Her nocturnal patrols often bring her into direct conflict with her creator's plans, which are frequently carried out by his obnoxious and volatile clone-son, José. Her role is not just a fighter but also a protector of the innocent, a role she accepts almost by accident as she defends the city from the various monsters and villains sent against her.
A key relationship is with Lucas Amato, a biology teacher and reporter who becomes her best friend as Adrian and her love interest as Cybersix. Lucas is unaware that his two close friends are the same person, creating a complex romantic tension. Cybersix is hesitant to fully commit to the relationship, believing her non-human nature makes her unworthy of love. Another vital relationship is with Data 7, a highly intelligent black panther who is her loyal companion and ally. Data 7 is revealed to be her brother, Cyber 29, whose brain was salvaged by Von Reichter after a fatal accident and placed into the panther's body. Other significant figures include Julian, a young homeless boy whom she acts as a surrogate mother and protector for, and Lori Anderson, a student in her class who has a crush on Adrian and is initially jealous of Cybersix.
Throughout the series, Cybersix undergoes notable development, primarily in her emotional journey. She begins as a lonely outcast but slowly builds a surrogate family around her, including Data 7, Julian, and Lucas. Her relationships help her grow, challenging her belief that she cannot be truly human. She learns to accept friendship and, by the series' end, is moving closer to embracing her capacity for love and connection, culminating in a final confrontation with her creator where her defiance is rooted in her newfound sense of self and belonging.
As a genetically engineered being, Cybersix possesses a range of notable superhuman abilities. These include augmented strength, allowing her to lift heavy objects and deliver powerful blows, and superhuman speed and agility, which she uses to perform incredible acrobatic feats while traversing the cityscape. She also has enhanced senses, such as night vision, which aids her in her nighttime patrols. Her combat skills, combined with her athleticism, make her a formidable fighter against the various monsters and villains she encounters. Her primary weakness is her absolute need for sustenance, which forces her into a predatory role that weighs on her conscience.
