Matatabi is a regular orange tabby cat with black stripes who serves as one of the main characters in the series. He was a childhood friend of Kuro, whom he knew by his stray name Kid, but their relationship fractured after a fight that resulted in the loss of Matatabi's right eye. Blaming Kuro for this injury, Matatabi declared himself Kuro's enemy and initially sought revenge. He is easily identified by his red eyepatch over his right eye, chipped ears, an X-shaped mark on his forehead, and red eyes. He wears a tattered cloak that conceals an arsenal of weapons, with his primary tools being a wooden boomerang capable of striking targets at great distances and a chainsaw.

Despite his serious and dedicated approach to training and carpentry, Matatabi is also notably lazy and gluttonous, lacking self-control when it comes to food or intoxicating substances like catnip. He tends to avoid trouble unless Kuro drags him into it, and when not fighting, he is often seen lounging on top of houses. As a kitten, he was more cheerful and mischievous, but as an adult he has become aloof, though his mischievous streak still surfaces occasionally.

His motivations stem from a deep-seated grudge over his lost eye, but over the course of the story this bitterness gradually softens into a friendly rivalry with Kuro. He eventually settles into the role of a reliable ally who provides backup during major conflicts. His journey involves overcoming his past trauma and reconciling with Kuro, and he is the only character who continues to refer to Kuro by his old stray name, Kid. Although he is not a cyborg, Matatabi is a formidable fighter with high agility and survival skills, and he is also an experienced carpenter. His main weaknesses are his lack of self-control when tempted by pleasure and his general reluctance to get involved unless prodded.
