Description
Mi is a central character in the Cyborg Kuro-chan series, serving as the deuteragonist and a cyborg cat created by the scientist Dr. Go. Originally an ordinary kitten, Mi was orphaned after his mother was killed by a rabid dog. He was found and nursed back to health by Dr. Go, and the two formed a deep familial bond. Later, Mi attempted to avenge his mother by confronting the genetically modified dog Patrasche, but he was killed in the fight. Dr. Go managed to recover his remains and rebuild him as a cyborg, saving his life. After this, Mi remained by Dr. Go's side, eventually becoming the leader of the Nyan-Nyan Army and assisting in Go's plans for world domination. However, repeated clashes with the rebellious cyborg cat Kuro led the pair to abandon their ambitions, and they settled into a peaceful but impoverished life in Sakuramachi Junkyard.
In terms of personality, Mi is kind-hearted, noble, and possesses a strong sense of chivalry. Unlike the crude and hot-tempered Kuro, Mi is gentle and considerate, often acting as a caretaker for Dr. Go and the other cats. He is extremely loyal and dedicated to Go, viewing him as family and putting his safety above all else. Despite his generally calm demeanor, Mi can become fiercely protective when Dr. Go is threatened, and on rare occasions he can lose his temper in a way that even Kuro finds alarming. He is also notably meticulous and principled, objecting to outright theft even when engaged in villainous schemes. A skilled cook, Mi excels at preparing meals but is notoriously bad at cleaning and laundry. To disguise his cyborg body in public, he sometimes wears a costume called the "Shy Dog" outfit.
Mi's primary motivation stems from his gratitude and devotion to Dr. Go. He initially supports Go's world-domination plans out of loyalty and a desire to repay the doctor for saving his life. Over time, however, Mi begins to develop his own conscience and questions Go's more extreme methods. After their defeat by Kuro, Mi's motivation shifts toward maintaining a peaceful existence with Go and helping those around him, often acting as the voice of reason in their comedic misadventures.
In the story, Mi acts as Kuro's main rival during the early parts of the series, serving as the field commander of Dr. Go's cyborg army. He is highly disciplined and skilled in combat, often wielding a large sword that can heat up, as well as a favorite cleaver. His fighting style emphasizes blade weapons, contrasting Kuro's preference for firearms. Despite his initial role as an antagonist, Mi's sense of honor and growing friendship with Kuro lead him to eventually become an ally. He frequently fights alongside Kuro to protect their home and friends, and the two develop a competitive friendship built on mutual respect.
Mi's relationships are central to his character. His bond with Dr. Go is the strongest, often described as that of a surrogate son or even a devoted spouse. He cares for Go's wellbeing, manages their household, and supports him through failures and hardships. His relationship with Kuro evolves from a lethal rivalry into a deep camaraderie, with Mi often acting as the more level-headed counterpart. He also serves as a mentor figure to the mass-produced M-kun cyborg soldiers, who look up to him for leadership.
Throughout the series, Mi undergoes significant character development. He begins as a cold and efficient cyborg soldier, but as he spends more time with Kuro and other humans, he develops a warm, compassionate personality. He learns to question Dr. Go's plans and eventually abandons his villainous role entirely, becoming a reliable hero who fights for the safety of others. His transformation highlights themes of redemption and the idea that machines can develop hearts and identities beyond their programming.
Notable abilities include his high combat proficiency with bladed weapons, particularly his signature heated sword and cooking knife. He has enhanced physical strength and durability typical of a cyborg, and his body is almost entirely mechanical, with few traces of his original feline appearance. He is also a natural leader, capable of commanding the Nyan-Nyan Army effectively. Outside of combat, his exceptional cooking skills are a defining trait, and he takes pride in preparing meals for Dr. Go and their friends.
