TV-Series
Description
El ladrón Gretel is a central antagonist from Maple Town Stories, a wolf who resides in the Wolf Forest located just outside Maple Town. His full name is not disclosed throughout the series. He is a tall figure with light brown fur and typically wears a distinctive outfit consisting of a red cap, a red vest, torn pants secured with a belt, and a tattered blue cape. His belt is equipped with several knives and a musket, and he carries a large saber on his lower back, which he primarily uses with brute force rather than skill.

In terms of personality, Gretel is characterized by strong pride and a significant self-interest, which drive him to a life of petty crime. He proudly proclaims himself a great thief and a great villain, yet his actual capabilities fall far short of this grand self-image. He is often shown to be easily frustrated and prone to failure, with his schemes succeeding only rarely. Despite his ineptitude as a thief, he possesses notable physical strengths, including terrifying stamina and remarkable resilience. He is also dexterous with his hands. However, his intelligence and education are severely lacking; he appears to have had no formal schooling, as he cannot count correctly and his handwriting is described as illegible. He shows signs of illiteracy, having difficulty reading books and demonstrating poor grammar and vocabulary.

His primary motivation is the fulfillment of his own desires, which are usually small-scale and self-serving. Rather than grand larceny, his crimes often involve stealing a child's snack or obtaining new clothes for himself. He has a particular fondness for corn muffins and is also known to enjoy drinking alcohol. His role in the story is that of a recurring troublemaker and comedic villain. He frequently storms into the peaceful town of Maple Town to commit his petty thefts, but his plans are almost always thwarted by the young animal residents, particularly the rabbit Patty and her friend Bobby. On the rare occasions he does manage to steal something, he is invariably chased away by Otto, the police officer. For example, his attempt to steal a necklace from the school is foiled by Patty and her friends.

Gretel's key relationships are primarily adversarial or opportunistic. He is a constant nuisance to Officer Otto, who chases him relentlessly. He interacts most frequently with the children of Maple Town, especially Bobby and Patty. While he intends to steal from them or cause them trouble, he often finds himself becoming entangled in their affairs, sometimes even requiring their assistance, as seen when he falls into a puddle in a cave and is rescued by Patty and Bobby. In one instance, he tricks Bobby by sending a letter posing as a "pitiful girl" looking for her mother, only to be discovered when Bobby arrives with corn muffins.

Over the course of the narrative, Gretel shows moments that hint at a more complex nature beneath his villainous exterior. Despite his constant failures, he displays a surprising level of persistence. He demonstrates a unique relationship with a character named Mr. Maron, who treats him with unusual kindness to the point of helping him build a house, an act that leaves the other children wary but which Gretel accepts. His most notable development occurs towards the series' end, regarding Patty's departure. Initially, he attempts to sabotage her leaving, but when confronted by Bobby, he admits that holding someone back is wrong. He declares that if a person truly wants to go, then a man should see them off with a smile, revealing an unexpected sense of honor and maturity. His notable abilities, while limited by his lack of formal training, include great physical endurance and handiness for crafting simple items, as he is shown making a scarf, even if he eventually discards it in a fit of pique.
