Description
Greguère le loup, sometimes referred to as Gréguère in French adaptations of Maple Town Stories, is a recurring character known for his role as a minor antagonist within the community. He is a wolf who has established himself in the forest near Maple Town, having moved into the area not long before the events of the series begin. In the French version of the television series, he is consistently named Greguère, while the original Japanese version or other adaptations may refer to him as Gretel.
As a character, Greguère is defined by his constant scheming. His primary role in the story is to serve as an obstacle for the young protagonists, particularly Patty the rabbit and her friend Bobby the bear. His personality is characterized by a desire to cause trouble, as he is frequently depicted crafting plans to steal ideas or create chaos for the main characters. Despite his intentions, he is not portrayed as a formidable or menacing villain. Instead, his schemes are consistently hapless and poorly executed, resulting in complete failures that lead to his own misfortune or humiliation rather than causing serious harm to others. For instance, on one occasion he attempted to steal an idea for flying from Patty and her friends, only for his attempt to end in a disastrous fall.
His motivations are generally self-serving, driven by a desire to outwit the other inhabitants of Maple Town for his own gain. However, his lack of competence prevents him from ever being a genuine threat. In terms of his role in specific stories, he has been known to involve himself directly in the children's adventures. During a hot air balloon ride, he hid inside the basket, intending to sabotage the trip for Patty, Johnny, Bobby, and Diana. As was typical for him, his plan backfired, and he fell out of the balloon, inadvertently forcing the young characters to resolve the dangerous situation he had created. This event highlights his function in the narrative as a catalyst for conflict, even if he does not succeed in his goals.
The character does not form close friendships or positive relationships with the main cast, as he is positioned as an outsider whose schemes set him against the friendly community of Maple Town. His development throughout the series remains minimal, as he is a static character meant to provide mild, comedic conflict rather than undergo a personal transformation. He has no notable superhuman abilities, his defining traits being his persistent but incompetent trickery and his recurring role as the town’s primary source of mischief.
