Description
Gretel is a primary character from the anime Maple Town Stories, serving as the town's recurring but largely ineffective antagonist. Residing in the Wolf Forest located just outside Maple Town, Gretel is a tall, anthropomorphic wolf with light brown fur. His typical attire consists of a red vest, torn pants secured with a belt, a red cap, and a tattered blue cape. He carries an array of weaponry, including a saber on his back and several knives attached to his belt, though his combat skill with these tools is notably unrefined, relying more on brute strength than technique.

In terms of personality, Gretel possesses an immense and often misguided sense of pride, frequently referring to himself as a great thief or a great villain despite his consistent failures. His ambitions are largely driven by self-interest and a desire for personal gain, yet his actual criminal exploits are remarkably petty, rarely amounting to more than stealing a child's snack or attempting to acquire new clothes. He is characterized by low cunning and poor planning, with nine out of ten of his schemes ending in disaster, typically resulting in him being chased away by the town's police officer, Otto. Gretel's background suggests a lack of formal education, as he is portrayed as being functionally illiterate; he cannot count properly, his handwriting is almost illegible, and reading books gives him a headache. His limited intelligence is a key trait, and his dialogue is marked by poor grammar.

Gretel's primary motivation is his desire for easy wealth and status, which manifests in his numerous petty thefts. He is driven by his own pride and a wish to be recognized as a formidable outlaw, even though his actions contradict this self-image. He has a known fondness for corn muffins and enjoys drinking alcohol. Within the story of Maple Town, Gretel functions as the central troublemaker, providing a low-stakes but persistent source of conflict for the town's young residents. His role is that of a comedic and bumbling villain, continuously devising plans to steal valuables like silver spoons or necklaces, only to be foiled by the cleverness and teamwork of the children. He is frequently seen in direct opposition to characters like Patty and Bobby, who are often responsible for thwarting his schemes. For example, on one occasion, his attempt to steal a silver spoon using a homemade bomb backfired spectacularly, leaving him covered in soot.

Gretel has notable key relationships with several characters. His most direct antagonist is Officer Otto, the town policeman who consistently pursues him for his crimes. He is also a frequent foil to Bobby, one of the older children in town, who, despite not being an academic student himself, is often able to outsmart Gretel. Their conflict is physical and clever; in one instance, a chase with Bobby led to Gretel accidentally falling into a puddle inside a cave. The relationship is not purely adversarial, as there are moments where the lines blur. In a later episode, Gretel was treated with unexpected kindness by a character named Maron, who helped him build a house, an act of goodwill that left Bobby feeling confused and wary. Another episode revealed a more sympathetic side, as Gretel was the one who sent a letter inviting someone to meet on a path with corn muffins, though he was met with hostility when his identity was discovered.

Gretel does experience subtle development over the course of the series. While he largely remains a comedic nuisance, there are hints of a more complex character. In the final episode, his perspective shifts concerning the departure of the main character, Patty. Rather than attempting to sabotage her leaving, Gretel seems to come to an understanding, expressing that if Patty wants to go, then a person should see her off with a smile. This suggests a grudging respect and a potential for growth beyond his simple villainous role. Despite his lack of book smarts, his notable abilities include terrifying stamina and resilience, as he is able to endure the repeated physical comedown from his failed plots. He is also surprisingly dexterous with his hands. However, his primary ability is his tenacity; no matter how many times he is defeated, he continues to scheme, ensuring his enduring presence as the troublesome but ultimately harmless wolf of Maple Town.
