TV-Series
Description
Apo Kanzaki is the younger adopted sister of the protagonist, Megu, and one of the two biological children of Mami Kanzaki and her husband. Her life, along with that of her brother Rabi, is forever changed at the start of the series when Mami uses magic to alter their memories, making them believe that Megu has always been the eldest child in the family. This act integrates the young witch seamlessly into the household as their new older sister.
In terms of personality, Apo is presented as a young girl with blonde hair typically styled in pigtails. She initially fills the role of an annoying younger sibling, often joining her brother Rabi in playing tricks on Megu. However, as the series progresses, she becomes noticeably less of a nuisance compared to her brother, showing a capacity for growth and a more mature side. Unlike Rabi, whose pranks can be mean-spirited or inappropriate, Apo possesses a clear sense of right and wrong; she is completely opposed to her brother's more mischievous and ecchi antics. Despite her young age, she displays a surprising amount of strength and is not afraid to use it, often hitting family members, particularly Rabi, with a toy hammer when she feels they are behaving inappropriately. This makes her a kind of cute bruiser, a little girl who enforces her own sense of order through physical comedy.
Apo's primary role in the story is as a member of Megu's Earth family, providing a domestic anchor for the magical girl's adventures. The sibling dynamic is a crucial part of Megu's development, as learning to live with and care for Apo and Rabi helps the witch understand complex human emotions like familial love and responsibility. One notable early incident shows Apo trying to calm Megu down after her brother’s prank goes too far, demonstrating that she can act as a mediator, even if she is violently pushed aside in Megu's fit of rage. Her relationship with Megu evolves from being a simple annoyance to a genuine sisterly bond; by the end of the series, Megu becomes a true cool big sister figure to her, and the feeling is mutual, as Apo and Rabi miss her dearly when she is away. In the final episode, after Mami attempts to make the family forget Megu once she returns to the witch world, Apo, along with her brother, remembers their sister and insists on searching for her, showing the lasting impact Megu had on her life. Apo is also noted for having a close bond with a St. Bernard dog named Gonbei, who is eventually adopted by the Kanzaki family. Her name in the French dub of the series is established as being short for Apolline.
