Description
Gastille is a primary antagonist introduced in the Cardfight!! Vanguard G: NEXT arc and plays a central role in the following G: Z storyline. He is the leader of a group known as the Apostles and the master of the hellish dimension called Relics. His human host on Earth is Arte Hibino. Serving as the self-proclaimed bishop of the Dragon Deity of Destruction, Gyze, Gastille is one of the original and most loyal followers of this destructive god, and his ultimate motivation is to orchestrate Gyze’s resurrection to bring about the end of the world.

In terms of appearance, Gastille has a striking and demonic form that echoes the imagery of the Dark Irregulars clan. He has pale white skin, four hands each with four fingers, and a small tricorne hat. He wears a mask that conceals the upper half of his face, leaving only his mouth and chin visible. His navy-colored outfit features stylized wings, multiple cords tipped with crystals, and several eye-like designs on his chest, coat, and even his long boots.

Gastille possesses a cold, calculating, and manipulative personality. He is entirely devoted to Gyze and views himself as a pawn in the greater scheme of destruction, a perspective that grants him a disconcerting sense of calm. He is a skilled liar, having deceived the character Shiranui by claiming that the card game Vanguard was distorting the fate of Planet Cray. Conversely, he also weaponizes the truth, as when he revealed to Chrono Shindou that he was responsible for the events of the Diffrider conflict. Gastille is remarkably composed in the face of failure, showing no concern or worry when his dimension Relics is destroyed or when his fellow Apostles, such as Dumjid and Gredora, are defeated and their Zeroth Dragons taken. This lack of concern stems from a deep-seated heartlessness; he views his subordinates merely as disposable pawns and shows no genuine care for their losses.

Within the story, Gastille acts as the direct link to the sealed Gyze and commands the other Apostles from his domain in Relics. He masterminds the plan to revive his master, which includes gathering human souls to power Relics and assigning missions to his underlings. Among these missions was having Chaos Breaker find a suitable host for Gyze, a person with a pure but formless imagination. His most critical role is to eliminate the primary threat to his plan: Kouji Ibuki, the vanguard of the deity Messiah. Having received a special blessing from Gyze, Gastille confronts Ibuki in a cardfight within a separate dimension. In this fight, each point of damage Ibuki takes causes chains to tighten around his heart, with a loss meaning certain death. As Ibuki nears the point of death, Chrono Shindou arrives and takes over the fight, ultimately defeating Gastille. Accepting his defeat gracefully, Gastille warns Chrono and the dying Ibuki that the world’s destruction is still inevitable even without him.

Key relationships define his role. As the leader of the Apostles, he commands a group that includes Dumjid, Gredora, Valeos, and Chaos Breaker, but he views them all as expendable tools. His most significant relationship is with his god, Gyze, whom he serves with unwavering loyalty. His direct adversary is Kouji Ibuki, whom he attempts to kill, and later Chrono Shindou, who ultimately defeats him. He also manipulated Shiranui from the shadows on Planet Cray, influencing him to serve the Apostles' goals.

Gastille shows little development in the sense of changing his beliefs, remaining a fanatical servant of destruction until the end. His development is more in his role as a puppet master, calmly coordinating the Apostles' plot until his own defeat. Notably, after his Diffride is broken and he is defeated, his subordinate Valeos assumes control of the remaining Apostles on Earth, showing that his plan was designed to continue without him.

In combat, Gastille is a formidable cardfighter who uses a Dark Irregulars deck. His strategy relies on the Darkness ability, and his most powerful card is the Zeroth Dragon of the End of the World, Dust, which serves as his trump card. His abilities as a Diffrider are enhanced by Gyze’s blessing, allowing him to transport himself and his opponent to a different dimension where his powers are maximized and his lethal fight conditions take effect.
