Description
Dark Face is a significant antagonist in the anime Cardfight!! Vanguard GZ, originating as an entity from the planet Cray. He is one of the Apostles of Gyze, a group of beings who serve the Dragon Deity of Destruction, Gyze, and who seek to revive their master and bring about destruction. Unlike some Apostles who are native to Cray, Dark Face achieves a physical presence on Earth through a process called Diffriding, where he possesses a human host. His chosen host is the former Company scientist Sousuke Wakamizu. While Sousuke was working at a research facility in Singapore for Christopher Lo, Dark Face, with the assistance of the Apostle known as Chaos Breaker, diffrided him. Following this possession, Dark Face defeated Christopher Lo in a cardfight, destroyed the laboratory, and stole crucial research data for the Apostles before disappearing.
As a character, Dark Face embodies a physically driven, simple, and impulsive nature. His behavior is marked by a quick temper and a tendency to act without extensive deliberation, which contrasts sharply with the precise, control-obsessed personality of his human host, Sousuke. However, his most defining trait is his unwavering loyalty and deep respect for the Megacolony queen, Gredora. He serves as one of her most devoted subordinates within the Apostles of Gyze, and she is the only one he has sworn his allegiance to above all others. Dark Face is self-aware of his own perceived shortcomings, acknowledging that he is a "half-finished" being, and it is Gredora's acceptance of him as he is that fuels his fierce devotion to her and her goals. He harbors a strong hatred for the members of Team Q4, particularly after Gredora is defeated by Kamui Katsuragi, intensifying his desire for revenge against them. He interacts with his fellow Apostles as comrades, though he has a notably poor relationship with Chaos Breaker, often clashing with him, while he shows a degree of respect for Gastille, addressing him with a formal title.
Dark Face's primary role in the narrative of Cardfight!! Vanguard GZ is to serve as one of the key antagonists working towards the revival of Gyze. He acts as the mechanic and technical expert for the Apostles, utilizing the brilliant scientific mind of his host, Sousuke Wakamizu. He is responsible for constructing the Relics on Earth; these are mystical prisons designed to hold the potential vessels that the Apostles have selected for Gyze. A unique aspect of his character is that while he provides the initial, rough concepts for these complex structures, it is Sousuke's exceptional intellectual capabilities that translate them into reality. Dark Face himself often does not fully understand the mechanisms of what he has built. He is also instrumental in the final stages of Gyze's revival, setting a dual virus trap that successfully transferred the stolen Zeroth Dragon cards to Gyze, contributing directly to the deity's complete awakening. He is directly involved in several key confrontations, including a failed attempt to eliminate Ka Tosaki by forcing him into a Relic, a plot that backfired when he was soundly defeated in a cardfight. In the final battle arc, he attacks the North American branch headquarters in an attempt to recover stolen Zeroth Dragons but is ultimately defeated by Misaki Tokura, leading to the destruction of his Diffrided form and his forced return to Cray.
The key relationships defining Dark Face are primarily with the human he possesses and the queen he follows. His relationship with Gredora is one of absolute fealty and deep personal admiration. He sees her as the mother of all Megacolony and his beloved queen, and he becomes fixated on avenging her defeat. In contrast, his relationship with his host, Sousuke Wakamizu, is purely parasitic and utilitarian. He possesses Sousuke and ruthlessly exploits his host's scientific genius to build his technologies without any apparent concern for Sousuke's own will or well-being. His relationships with other Apostles are mixed; he is shown to be on poor terms with his diffrider Chaos Breaker, yet willing to follow Gastille's orders and later cooperate with Valeos.
Throughout the series, Dark Face undergoes little emotional change but experiences significant shifts in his circumstances. He begins as a newly diffrided Apostle serving under Gredora, successfully aiding in the Apostles' early plans. After Gredora's defeat, his motivations become intensely personal, driven by a desire for revenge against Team Q4. The most notable development is in his final moments; despite his defeat at Misaki Tokura's hands, his pre-planned virus trap ensures his mission is a success, allowing Gyze to fully revive. This act demonstrates that while impulsive, he is also a cunning and effective agent of destruction.
In terms of abilities, Dark Face is a formidable cardfighter who uses a Megacolony deck, themed around insects and the power to paralyze or "lock" the opponent's units. His avatar card is Intimidating Mutant, Darkface, and he also commands powerful units like Mutant Deity, Darkface, Giant Mutant, Darkface, and the Zeroth Dragon of Death Garden, Zoa, which was entrusted to him by Gredora. Beyond fighting, his most notable abilities are technical. Using Sousuke Wakamizu's knowledge, he can construct advanced technological and magical systems like the Relic prisons. He is also proficient in creating computer viruses and employing physical explosives to breach security systems, showing his aptitude for sabotage and subterfuge.
