Description
Gou Matsuoka is the younger sister of Rin Matsuoka and a student at Iwatobi High School, where she is one year behind her brother in grade level. Her birthday is December 25th. She lives with her mother and brother, and her family history includes the loss of her father, a circumstance that had a significant emotional impact on Rin. Gou has a long ponytail and often wears a small, fish-shaped hair ornament. Her appearance is noted for bearing a strong resemblance to her older brother.

Gou is characterized by her energetic, direct, and proactive personality. She is outspoken and can come across as harsh, but she is fundamentally thoughtful and has a strong sense of responsibility. Despite her own lack of athletic ability and the fact that she cannot swim, she possesses a remarkable talent for organization and management. As the manager of the Iwatobi High School swimming club, she takes on tasks such as arranging training camps, scheduling practice meets, and collecting and analyzing data for the team. One of her most distinctive traits is an intense admiration for muscles; she is deeply knowledgeable about different muscle groups and has been known to identify individuals solely by the physical characteristics of their bodies. She dislikes her given name, Gou, as she feels it sounds masculine, and she initially prefers to be called Kou. Despite her insistence, most of her friends continue to call her Gou, and she eventually comes to accept it.

Her primary motivation stems from her concern for her brother, Rin. After he returns from studying abroad in Australia, he becomes distant from his family and his former friends. Gou worries about him and believes that reconnecting with his old friends from the Iwatobi swim club will help him find his former self again. This desire to bridge the gap between Rin and his past is what drives her to become the manager of the Iwatobi swim team.

In the story, Gou serves as the dedicated and ambitious manager of the Iwatobi Swimming Club, playing a crucial role in supporting the male athletes and pushing them toward their goals. She acts as a key link between the Iwatobi team and Rin at Samezuka Academy, using her position as his sister to maintain a connection that might otherwise have been completely severed. Her involvement is instrumental in the formation and continued operation of the club.

Her most significant relationship is with her older brother, Rin. The bond between them is deep, and despite Rin's periods of silence and emotional distance, Gou cares for him deeply. She also has a close, almost familial friendship with Sousuke Yamazaki, whom she has known since childhood and considers a second brother. Within the Iwatobi team, she has a relationship of mutual respect and fondness with Makoto Tachibana, finding his calm demeanor reliable. Her dynamic with Nagisa Hazuki is loud and argumentative, particularly over her name, though she appreciates his optimism. She holds Rei Ryugazaki in admiration for his growth and kind-hearted nature. Characters from the rival Samezuka Academy, including captain Seijuro Mikoshiba and his brother Momotaro, become romantically interested in Gou, often leading to protective reactions from Rin.

Throughout the series, Gou undergoes notable development. Starting as a shy child who followed her brother and Sousuke, she grows into a confident, resilient, and assertive leader who is unafraid to voice her opinions. Her role as manager helps her develop a strong sense of personal identity outside of being simply Rin's sister. Her experiences with the team, navigating their trials and triumphs, allow her to feel connected to her father and brother through swimming, even though she cannot participate in the sport herself. Later in the timeline, she pursues her dream of becoming a sports journalist, enrolling in a local university with her friend Chigusa Hanamura to achieve this goal.

Her notable abilities lie not in physical athleticism, but in her exceptional organizational and managerial skills. She is highly proactive, often having training schedules, locations, and practice records prepared before the team requests them. Her unique knowledge of human anatomy, specifically musculature, is another specialized skill that she applies to her role, even if it is an unusual personal passion.
