Description
Nagisa Yukiai is the central protagonist of the anime film, a high school girl living in the seaside town of Hinosaka. She is characterized by an impulsive and kind-hearted nature, yet she carries a sense of impatience because she has not yet discovered a clear future calling for herself. From a young age, her grandmother taught her about the concept of kotodama, the belief that spirits dwell within words and that spoken words have a tangible effect on reality. Nagisa fully embraces this idea and is even able to see kotodama as visible, colored wisps that appear when strong emotions are vocalized.

Her motivation is driven by a sincere desire to connect with others and to prove that genuine words can reach people’s hearts and create positive change. This leads her to wander into an abandoned mini FM station one day, where she impulsively begins mimicking a radio DJ. To her surprise, her voice is actually broadcast and reaches Shion Yazawa, the daughter of the station’s former operator. Nagisa’s encounter with Shion sparks her determination to revive the Aquamarine radio station as a way to comfort Shion and possibly awaken Shion’s mother, who has been in a coma for years.

Nagisa’s role in the story is that of a catalyst and leader. She rallies her childhood friends Kaede Tatsunokuchi and Shizuku Dobashi, along with new acquaintances such as Ayame Nakahara, Otoha Biwakoji, and Yuu Hamasuka, to form a group that operates the revived station. Her belief in kotodama guides the group’s efforts, and she often serves as the emotional core, encouraging her friends to speak honestly. Key relationships include her deep bond with Shion, whom she helps open up and find purpose; her close but sometimes strained friendship with the blunt Kaede; and her supportive connections with the other girls, all of whom play different roles in the broadcasting project.

Throughout the narrative, Nagisa undergoes significant development. Initially a girl unsure of her place in the world, she gains confidence as she learns to use her voice effectively. When the station faces demolition, her passion is tested, and she must overcome internal conflict within the group. Her growth culminates in a final broadcast where the collective kotodama of the community becomes visible to everyone, demonstrating that her faith in words was well placed. By the end, she has found her direction and, years later, becomes a professional radio personality.

Nagisa’s most notable ability is her perception of kotodama, which allows her to see the spiritual energy released by spoken words. This ability reinforces her cautiousness about negative speech and fuels her optimism about the power of kind, sincere words. She also has a personal stress-relief method: she rings a bell at a local temple and shouts her frustrations into it, using the bell’s resonance to muffle her voice. Her impulsive yet empathetic actions are what set the entire story in motion, and her unwavering belief in kotodama ultimately unites her community.
