Description
Konatsu Yamamoto is a student at Joto Vocational High School and a member of its English Club. She comes from a family highly regarded for its spiritual and supernatural knowledge. Her childhood was marked by chronic illness, which led her parents to be deeply overprotective of her. This dynamic contrasted sharply with the treatment of her older sister, who excelled both academically and socially, fostering a deep inferiority complex within Konatsu.
Outwardly, Konatsu often presents a harsh, arrogant, and judgmental facade. She can be bossy, insulting, and quick to belittle others, which makes her seem unapproachable and selfish. This abrasive personality is a defense mechanism that masks her profound insecurity and jealousy. Beneath this exterior, she is intelligent and reserved, struggling with the belief that she is inherently less capable than her sister.
Her primary motivation is to step out of her sister’s shadow and forge an independent identity. She is driven by a strong need to prove her own worth and live life on her own terms. In the story, she serves as a supporting figure in the protagonist Yushi Inaba's school life, representing a human source of social tension and rivalry that contrasts with the harmonious supernatural community of Kotobuki-sou. Her role largely revolves around her interactions within the school's English Club and her initial clashes with Yushi.
The most pivotal relationship in her background is with her sister, which dictates much of her behavior. Her relationship with Yushi begins antagonistically, as she looks down on him, but it gradually evolves into a grudging respect and understanding as Yushi remains unfazed by her attitude. Her interactions with the diverse and accepting residents of the apartment building slowly begin to dismantle her preconceived notions.
Throughout the series, Konatsu experiences noticeable development. Her defensive shell gradually cracks as she is exposed to the unconditional acceptance of the Kotobuki-sou community, learning to form genuine bonds not based on competition or insecurity. Her notable abilities lie in her exceptional intelligence and academic skill. Furthermore, the spiritual expertise of her family has given her a broad and practical knowledge of yokai and the supernatural world, which occasionally proves helpful to those around her.
