ONA
Description
Prior Sala is the head of the priory in Lindenfeld in the animated Castlevania series, and he serves as a central antagonist in the storyline focused on Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. He presents himself as a quiet, courteous, and somewhat mysterious cleric, but his demeanor masks a deep and dangerous transformation. Where he was once an ordinary priest devoted to the church, Sala has been reshaped by trauma and manipulation into a zealous servant of the very forces his order once opposed.

His background is rooted in the destruction caused by the conflict between humanity and Dracula. When the church at Gresit executed Dracula's wife, Lisa, the resulting war devastated the countryside and shattered the faith of many religious figures. Sala was among those whose belief was shaken. This spiritual crisis made him vulnerable to the influence of a powerful night creature that arrived at the priory, a being the monks called the Visitor. Rather than attack, the creature communicated with the monks within their minds and persuaded them to abandon their devotion to the church. Under Sala's direction, they hid the creature in the priory's crypts, strapped it to a cross, and began carrying out its instructions. The monks abandoned their holy symbols in favor of the Visitor's mark, which was the alchemical notation for hell, and carved symbols meaning change throughout the town.

Sala's personality reflects his collapse and his twisted renewal of purpose. He is eerily calm and imperturbable, often speaking in a flat, monotone voice that others find unsettling. Although he can be polite and respectful, those who meet him sense that he is not to be trusted and that he is dangerous. He is intensely focused and secretive, letting the priory fall into disrepair while he and his followers devote themselves to their dark work. Despite the grim nature of his beliefs, he remains highly organized and functional, able to manage his monks and pursue his plans with patience.

His motivations are rooted in a reimagined theology. Sala still believes in God, but he has come to the conclusion that if God is perfect, then the rebellion and fall of Lucifer must have been part of a divine plan. From this reasoning, he concludes that Hell, its demons, the night creatures, and Dracula himself are the bearers of true wisdom. He worships Dracula and believes that the vampire's desire to destroy humanity would send human souls to Hell, which Sala regards as the true land of God. His central goal is to resurrect Dracula by opening a gate to Hell, a plan he pursues by feeding the souls of Lindenfeld's inhabitants to the Visitor.

In the story, Sala emerges as the driving force behind the conflict in Lindenfeld. He allows the traveler Saint Germain access to the priory's books on the condition that any information about Dracula be handed over, a sign of his obsessive interest in the vampire lord. When Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades arrive in the town after killing night creatures, Sala and his monks regard their deeds with hostility, considering the destruction of these creatures a kind of sacrilege. The growing suspicion of the heroes pushes Sala to accelerate his plans. He and his monks carry out a ritual that ignites alchemical symbols throughout the town, burning the population alive and collecting their souls to empower the Visitor. The ceremony opens a passage intended to reach Hell and Dracula. When the plan is exposed, Sala fights the town's leader, the Judge, and fatally wounds him. The dying Judge directs Sala to an escape route, which turns out to be a trap, and Sala is killed by the spikes concealed within it.

Sala's key relationship is with the Visitor, the night creature he serves and treats as a new god. His followers, the monks of the priory, are loyal to him and share in his transformation, forming a closed and secretive community that defends its work. His dealings with Saint Germain are transactional and guarded, with Sala using the scholar's knowledge while controlling what he can access. With Trevor and Sypha, he is an adversary whose true nature slowly comes to light as they investigate the town. His confrontation with the Judge illustrates both his willingness to kill in defense of his mission and his capacity for self-deception, as he accepts what he believes is help from a dying enemy.

In terms of abilities, Sala possesses no notable supernatural powers of his own. His strength lies in his leadership, his command over the priory, and his knowledge of the rituals and alchemical practices needed to advance the Visitor's plan. He is also a capable fighter, successfully besting the Judge in personal combat. His most significant act of power is orchestrating the mass ritual that sacrifices the town's people and channels their souls into the Visitor, demonstrating that his influence and preparation can reshape the fate of an entire community.
