ONA
Description
L'ancien, known in English as the Elder, is the leader of the Speakers, a wandering group of scholars who preserve knowledge through oral tradition. He is also the grandfather of Sypha Belnades. He first appears in the city of Gresit, where the Speakers have taken refuge from the Church’s persecution. When two priests attempt to kill him for harboring forbidden knowledge, he is rescued by Trevor Belmont, the last surviving member of the Belmont clan of monster hunters. Grateful for the aid, the Elder welcomes Trevor into the Speakers’ camp and later entrusts him with a vital mission: to descend into the catacombs beneath Gresit and rescue Sypha, who has been trapped there. In exchange, the Elder promises to lead the Speakers out of the city to safety before the Church’s agents can capture them.

The Elder’s personality is defined by wisdom, pragmatism, and quiet authority. He carries the weight of his people’s survival and understands the necessity of compromise in a hostile world. His primary motivation is the protection of the Speakers and the preservation of their accumulated knowledge, which he sees as more valuable than any single life. He is not a fighter; his role in the story is that of a mentor and a catalyst. He provides Trevor with crucial information about the city’s layout and the threat beneath it, and his plea for help sets the main adventure of the first season in motion.

His key relationship is with Sypha, whom he raised and trained. He cares deeply for her but also recognizes her strength and independence, trusting her abilities even when he cannot be present. His interactions with Trevor are brief but meaningful: he is one of the first people to treat Trevor with respect rather than suspicion, and he offers a rare moment of trust that Trevor reciprocates. The Elder’s development is minimal due to his limited screen time, but he demonstrates a clear arc from desperate leader to relieved guardian when he learns that Sypha has survived. His final appearance shows him safely hidden in the catacombs, having fulfilled his promise to his people.

The Elder possesses no supernatural abilities or combat skills. His notable strengths are his vast knowledge of history, lore, and the hidden passages of Gresit, as well as his diplomatic skill in managing the Speakers’ precarious position. He is a figure of quiet resilience, representing the intellectual and cultural resistance against both the Church’s dogma and Dracula’s war, and his guidance is essential to the early success of Trevor and Sypha’s quest.
