ONA
Description
In the animated series Castlevania, the character known as the Magician is a minor antagonist who appears in the third season. He is an unnamed and reclusive sorcerer who established his own domain in the countryside following the chaos and collapse of organized society after Dracula's death. The Magician's primary goal was to build a grand city-state for himself, a personal kingdom he envisioned ruling over.
To achieve this ambition, the Magician used his powerful magic to enslave the populations of entire surrounding villages, forcing them to labor as his builders. His control was exerted through a unique form of mind-controlling magic, visually represented by pale green, crown-like energy rings that encircled the heads of his victims. A character named Miranda, who escaped his grasp, described his cruel process by claiming he had "cooked their souls down to ash," suggesting the enslavement was absolute and the individuals were rendered empty shells with no free will. The Magician's personality is not explored through dialogue, as he never speaks on screen. Instead, his character is defined entirely by his actions: he is calculating, power-hungry, and utterly indifferent to the suffering of others, viewing human beings solely as tools for his construction projects.
The Magician serves as an obstacle for the forgemaster Isaac. After being directed to the Magician's tower by Miranda, Isaac marches on the city-state with his army of night creatures. In response, the Magician ordered his enslaved populace to attack. He demonstrated his powers by levitating his slaves and coalescing hundreds of bodies into a massive, grotesque sphere, a technique that summoned a creature resembling the demonic entity known as Legion. Despite this formidable defense, Isaac's night creatures proved superior. When Isaac confronted him directly, the Magician made a final attempt to survive by casting his enslavement spell on Isaac. However, Isaac was able to resist the magic, mirroring Miranda's earlier resistance. The Magician was then killed by Isaac with a single, swift stab, which instantly dispelled his magic and caused all of his enslaved workers to collapse.
The Magician has no significant relationships. He is connected to Miranda as a survivor of his purge, but he left her alone because her own magical abilities made her resistant to his control and therefore useless as a laborer. His only true relationship is adversarial with Isaac, who ends his life and reign. The Magician does not undergo any character development or change throughout his brief appearance. His role is purely functional: to serve as a test of Isaac's power and moral trajectory. In the following season, Isaac reflects on the event, speaking to the Magician's dead body and remarking that killing him felt righteous, as it was an act of removing evil from the world rather than one of simple revenge.
The Magician's most notable ability is his large-scale mind control. He can simultaneously enslave hundreds or thousands of people from a distance, forcing them to perform complex tasks like construction or combat. This magic manifests as the crown of thorns visual effect and also grants him the power to levitate his victims. His ultimate combat technique was fusing his enslaved masses into a colossal, flesh-and-bone golem reminiscent of Legion. However, his magic has limits, as it can be resisted by individuals with strong willpower or their own magical abilities, such as Isaac and Miranda. His design and appearance bear a resemblance to the Master Librarian character from the video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
