ONA
Description
The character known as Bispo, or simply the Bishop, is a major antagonist introduced in the first season of the animated series. He is a high-ranking cleric originally from the city of Targoviste, who holds a deeply fanatical and corrupted view of his faith. His most significant and destructive act is condemning Lisa Tepes, the wife of Dracula, to be burned at the stake after falsely accusing her of witchcraft. This single event directly triggers Dracula's declaration of war against all of humanity, setting the central conflict of the story in motion.

The Bishop is defined by his extreme self-righteousness and delusions of grandeur. He possesses an unshakable belief that his interpretation of God's will is the only correct one, and he sees it as his divine mission to purge Wallachia of anyone he deems impious or heretical. He is not merely a man of faith but a political opportunist. As Dracula's demonic armies ravage the country and other religious superiors are killed, the Bishop sees a chance to consolidate power. He famously declares that he will effectively become the Church itself, revealing that his true motivation is not spiritual salvation but temporal control. He is cruel, manipulative, and entirely without empathy, showing sadistic satisfaction in destroying those who do not conform to his views, such as the peaceful community of Speakers whom he blames for the demonic attacks to incite a murderous mob.

In the story, the Bishop serves as the human catalyst for the apocalypse and the primary human antagonist of the first season. He is a direct foil to the protagonist, Trevor Belmont, who comes from a family that was excommunicated and destroyed by the very Church the Bishop represents. The Bishop threatens Trevor and orders his thugs to attack the Speakers, placing him in direct opposition to the heroes. His most critical relationship is with the demon Blue Fangs. When the demonic forces finally breach the city of Gresit, the Bishop hides in his church, believing himself protected by God. Blue Fangs confronts him there, explaining that his own hypocrisy and lies have caused God to abandon this house of worship. The demon then kills him with a horrific kiss, a scene that serves as a brutal judgment on his life's work.

The Bishop remains static in his fanaticism, showing no remorse or self-reflection even as he faces death. His role, however, extends beyond his demise. In the second season, his corpse is reanimated as a zombie by the Devil Forgemaster Hector. Under the command of the vampire Carmilla, the undead Bishop is forced to use his clerical authority one last time to bless the water of a river, which is then used as a trap to annihilate a portion of Dracula's army. The holy water destroys his undead body, bringing about his final end.

Regarding notable abilities, the Bishop himself has no magical or supernatural powers. His authority is entirely derived from his position in the Church. His primary weapon is his ability to manipulate the faithful through rhetoric, fear, and mob violence. He commands a network of thuggish priests and uses the threat of excommunication and execution to enforce his will. His power is entirely institutional, which makes his ultimate fate—being forsaken by the very God he claims to serve and killed by a demon inside his own church—a fitting condemnation of his character.
