Description
Billy Hickam is a character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower. He is a soldier of the Principality of Zeon who holds the rank of ensign and serves as a mobile suit pilot. Identified as having the potential of a Newtype during the One Year War, he previously sortied in a Psycommu test high mobility type Zaku II at the decisive battle of A Baoa Qu. After the war, he made his way to Earth to join Zeon remnants, where he became a member of Daryl Lorenz's special operations team in Southeast Asia, functioning as one of its best pilots and serving as either the assault leader or executive officer.
In terms of personality, Billy is depicted as young for both an officer and a soldier. He appears to enjoy battle and conducts himself with a cold and ruthless demeanor in combat situations, even going so far as to recommend lethal measures against non-combatants to ensure mission secrecy. Despite a tall and striking appearance with a hairstyle that covers his left eye, he is characterized as a heavy smoker with a picky eating habit. He holds a significant and somewhat complex interest in Daryl Lorenz. While he is deeply impressed by Daryl's combat abilities and genuine belief in his cause, praising him as a true ace pilot, Billy also engages in subtle sarcasm and mocking behavior towards him. Although his own Newtype abilities are noted by fellow soldiers, Billy himself dismisses his own power as insignificant following the trauma of A Baoa Qu, instead believing that Daryl is a true Newtype.
Within the story of Bandit Flower, Billy is a key member of the mission to retrieve the Reuse P. Psycho Device on Earth. He operates primarily in an Acguy mobile suit, often alongside a comrade named Sebastian. Throughout the operation, he demonstrates his Newtype perception, sensing approaching enemy mobile suits and guiding his allies. His role involves direct combat, infiltration, and reconnaissance, such as when he infiltrated the South Seas Alliance's floating city of Rigue to gather intelligence on their defenses. He is shown to be a capable and ruthless fighter but also experiences the moral weight of his actions, such as when he closes the eyes of a young sentry he was forced to kill, later weeping from the guilt. During the final confrontation of the film, he pilots a Hygogg to secure an escape route for the retreating South Seas Alliance forces. He successfully ambushes the Atlas Gundam, destroying some of its equipment, but underestimates the mobile suit's capabilities in a counterattack. His Hygogg is severely damaged, with both arms severed, leaving him in a critical situation as Sebastian attempts to provide cover fire.
