TV-Series
Description
Ayumi Hayashi is a young student from Sendai who becomes an aspiring idol, making her first appearances in the Wake Up, Girls! Eternal Senses manga and the Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter anime television series. She is a member of the Green Leaves Entertainment group named Run, Girls, Run!.
In terms of appearance, Ayumi has medium-length black hair that is typically tied into a side ponytail with a red bow. She has light-brown eyes and is fairly short, standing at approximately five feet tall. She is often seen in a blue school uniform with a checked skirt, a light blue and white striped bow, and black socks and shoes.
Ayumi has a personality that is initially quiet and reserved, which makes her appear quite shy. Unlike her fellow group members Otome Morishima and Itsuka Atsugi, she does not seem to have a prior, established obsession with idols. Despite her quiet exterior and shyness, she is described as being bright on the inside, and her singing and dancing abilities are excellent. Her most defining trait is her tendency to become star-struck, especially when in the presence of Mayu Shimada, a member of the idol group Wake Up, Girls!. She grows weak-kneed when coming face-to-face with Mayu, and this reaction is a consistent and sometimes humorous part of her character.
Ayumi's primary motivation to become an idol is directly inspired by her interactions with Wake Up, Girls!, and Mayu in particular. In one pivotal incident, she gets lost at an inn and hides inside one of the group's animal costumes. While inside, she overhears Mayu speaking about the duty of idols to bring smiles to their audiences. This conversation deeply inspires her. Seizing the moment, she later declares her wish to become an idol to Mayu, who wishes her luck. Unlike some of her friends, she is not driven by a pre-existing fandom but by the professional and heartfelt example set by the idols she encounters.
Ayumi's role in the story is to represent the positive impact that established idols can have as role models for the next generation. She and her friends, Otome and Itsuka, form a trio of middle school students who develop a growing desire to become idols after witnessing Wake Up, Girls!. Initially, they are taken on as idols-in-training and assigned menial tasks such as handing out fliers and cleaning the WUG dormitory. While they find the work exhausting and consider giving up, Ayumi recalls Mayu's words about the importance of an idol's smile and purpose, which encourages her and her friends to persevere. Her determination is shown in small acts of dedication, such as enduring a cat scratch to help find a lost item for the senior idols. Her key relationships are with her two fellow trainees, Otome and Itsuka, and with the members of Wake Up, Girls!, specifically her idol, Mayu Shimada, whom she looks up to.
Throughout Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter, Ayumi develops from a shy, star-struck fan into a determined young woman with a clearer sense of purpose. Her initial shyness is gradually overcome by her newfound commitment to the hard work required of an idol. The core lesson she learns and internalizes is that being an idol is not just about performance, but about having the resolve to work hard and the determination to bring happiness to others. This development solidifies her path as she and her friends formally introduce themselves to Wake Up, Girls! and begin their own journey in the entertainment industry. Her notable abilities include a natural talent for both singing and dancing, which remain strong despite her initial insecurities about her quiet personality.
