ONA
Description
Phoenix Nero is a Bronze Knight of the Phoenix constellation in the animated series Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya, serving as the counterpart to the character Phoenix Ikki from the original Saint Seiya story. He is the older brother of Andromeda Shaun and is introduced as a rogue Phoenix Knight working under the employ of Vander Guraad, though he eventually becomes one of Athena's knights.

In his childhood, Nero was described by his sister as fierce and tough but kind. He was an honorable child who trained his younger sister to defend herself and cared deeply for her. His life changed when he went to Death Queen Island to undergo the harsh training required to become the Bronze Knight of the Phoenix constellation. The inhumane conditions of that training, combined with a cruel loss he suffered there, transformed him completely. He buried his previous gentle identity in flames along with all of his pain and suffering, and from that point onward he defined himself through wrath, hatred, and pride as the Phoenix Knight.

Physically, Nero is a muscular and imposing young man with tan skin, navy blue hair, and silvery blue eyes. In terms of personality, he presents a volatile and fiery demeanor that frequently puts him in conflict with those around him. He styles himself as an invincible agent of hatred and wrath, but this image is partly a delusion; his telepathic confrontation with the Gold Knight Virgo Shaka after gaining the Phoenix armor reveals the vulnerable and conflicted person beneath the harsh exterior. Although he outwardly rejects his past, his deep bond with his sister and the suffering he endured remain central to who he is.

His motivations are initially driven by anger and the desire to escape the pain of his past, which leads him to serve Vander Guraad and fight alongside the Black Knights against Athena's forces. Over the course of the story, his loyalty shifts as he reconnects with his true self. He comes into conflict with Pegasus Seiya, and their rivalry is a significant part of the narrative; the series ends with a battle between Seiya and Nero that is interrupted by Sienna's transformation into Athena. In the later storyline known as Battle for Sanctuary, Nero fights a losing battle against the Gold Knight Virgo Shaka, further testing his resolve.

His most important relationship is with his younger sister, Andromeda Shaun, who was abandoned by their parents and whose only relative is Nero. Though his transformation drove a wedge between them, his protective feelings for her never fully disappeared, and she remains the person most connected to the kind child he once was. His relationship with Seiya evolves from hostility toward a more complicated dynamic as he moves closer to Athena's cause.

As a warrior, Nero is a highly capable Bronze Knight. When he fights, he appears bathed in burning Cosmo, and he is known for his signature technique called Phoenix Rising. His fighting style is aggressive and fueled by his intense emotions, reflecting both the fiery nature of his constellation and the inner turmoil that defines him. His character arc is one of recovery and redemption, moving from a hatred-driven rogue to a knight who can once again fight for protection and justice, particularly for the sister he always cared about.
