Description
Marin de Águia is a Silver Saint from the twentieth century, serving the goddess Athena as the guardian of the Eagle constellation. She is one of the few women to have attained the rank of Amazon, which requires her to conceal her face behind a mask according to the Amazon code. Born in Japan on March 18, she stands 1.67 meters tall and weighs 51 kilograms. She was assigned to train the orphaned Seiya, also Japanese, and spent six years shaping him into the Bronze Saint of Pegasus. Her training was strict but fair, and she imparted not only combat techniques but also the theoretical principles of cosmo energy and the importance of protecting Athena.
Marin is a highly observant and rational warrior who adapts quickly to any situation. Despite her disciplined exterior, she cares deeply for her pupil and is willing to defy the Sanctuary’s orders to protect him. When the false Pope (Gemini Saga) ordered the Silver Saints to eliminate the Bronze Saints for breaking Athena’s laws, Marin was sent alongside Lizard Misty. To save Seiya, she used an illusion technique known as Empty Fist (Kū Ken) to fake his death. When the deception was uncovered, she was branded a traitor and forced to operate outside the Sanctuary. Later, she defeated Hound Asterion using her Eagle Toe Flash technique (Lampejo da Águia) and sent a message back to the Pope, writing “Protect Athena” in the sand, a hidden clue that helped reveal the true identity of the goddess.
Her role in the story extends beyond that of a mentor. During the assault on the Twelve Temples, Marin appeared at the stairway poisoned by Pisces Aphrodite’s Demon Roses. She removed her own mask and placed it over Seiya’s face to filter the deadly scent, while she herself collapsed. After recovering, she climbed Mount Star Hill, a location reserved for the Pope alone, and discovered the corpse of the true Pope Shion, confirming the usurpation by Gemini Saga. This revelation was critical to the Bronze Saints’ mission.
Marin’s personal motivations are intertwined with a search for her lost younger brother, whose name is later revealed as Tohma of Icarus, a celestial warrior serving Artemis. This search led many to mistakenly believe she was Seiya’s missing sister, but that mystery is resolved separately. Her relationship with Gold Saint Leo Aiolia is marked by mutual romantic feelings, yet both choose to set aside personal desires to serve Athena, making their love unfulfilled.
Throughout the series, Marin’s development is subtle but significant. She evolves from a strict, somewhat distant instructor into a fiercely protective ally who takes active risks for the greater good. In the Asgard arc, she is defeated by Megrez Delta Alberich, but she continues to fight. In the Hades arc, she locates Seiya’s sister Seika and helps protect her from Thanatos’ attack, demonstrating her enduring loyalty.
As a Silver Saint, Marin possesses considerable combat abilities. Her signature attack is the Eagle Toe Flash, a powerful flying kick delivered with the ferocity of an eagle, capable of stunning or even killing an opponent. She also uses the Meteor Punch (Ryusei Ken), a rapid barrage of one hundred punches per second, which she taught to Seiya. The Empty Fist technique is not an attack but a strategic feint used to mislead enemies. In later adaptations, her skills also include healing capabilities, though her primary role remains that of a formidable warrior and teacher.
