Description
Tanjiro Kamado comes from a mountain-dwelling family of charcoal burners. His family is slaughtered by the demon Muzan Kibutsuji, leaving only his younger sister Nezuko, who survives transformed into a demon. This tragedy drives Tanjiro to become a Demon Slayer, seeking vengeance against Muzan and a cure for Nezuko. He trains under former Water Hashira Sakonji Urokodaki, mastering Water Breathing techniques and developing heightened endurance plus an acute sense of smell capable of detecting opponent vulnerabilities.

Tanjiro possesses ruffled black hair with burgundy or red tips, dark red eyes with white pupils, and a prominent forehead scar. This scar evolves from a childhood burn into a flame-like Demon Slayer Mark during intense battles, signifying surges in his combat power. He typically wears a black-and-green checkered haori over a standard Demon Slayer uniform and carries a wooden box on his back to shelter Nezuko during daylight. His father's hanafuda earrings, depicting a rising sun, become a recurring target for Muzan's forces.

Personality-wise, Tanjiro exhibits profound kindness and empathy, often extending compassion even to the demons he battles, acknowledging their former humanity and tragic circumstances. This contrasts sharply with his unwavering resolve to protect innocents and eliminate threats, sparking fierce outbursts of rage against cruelty, like when confronting demons such as Daki or Muzan. He values honesty and familial bonds, especially with Nezuko, whose condition fuels his journey. His determination is balanced by practicality; he readily seeks help from allies like Zenitsu, Inosuke, and the Hashira while mentoring others like Kanao Tsuyuri.

In combat, Tanjiro employs Water Breathing forms for fluid, defensive maneuvers but increasingly relies on Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God), later revealed as the ancient Sun Breathing style. This technique, inherited through familial rituals, grants immense offensive power at great physical cost. During the Mugen Train mission, he joins Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku to investigate disappearances linked to the demon Enmu, Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki. Enmu traps passengers—including Tanjiro and his companions—in enchanted sleep. Tanjiro overcomes illusory dreams of his deceased family through Nezuko's intervention and a vision of his father, awakening to decapitate Enmu after a struggle involving the train's fusion with the demon. Following Enmu's defeat, Upper Rank Three Akaza ambushes the group. Tanjiro witnesses Rengoku's fatal duel with Akaza, throws his sword in a failed attempt to halt Akaza's retreat, and declares Rengoku the moral victor for protecting all passengers. Rengoku's dying encouragement strengthens Tanjiro's resolve.

Later arcs show Tanjiro refining Sun Breathing, unlocking the crimson Nichirin blade to inhibit demon regeneration, and learning of his ancestry's link to the first Breath user. In the final battle against Muzan, he sustains severe injuries including the loss of his right eye and left arm. Muzan's demonic blood temporarily transforms him into a powerful demon, but he reverts to humanity with permanent disabilities: blindness in his right eye and limited mobility in his regenerated left arm. After Muzan's defeat, he marries Kanao Tsuyuri and establishes a peaceful lineage.
