Description
Kanan Matsuura is a main character from the Love Live! Sunshine!! series, a third-year student at Uranohoshi Girls High School who lives on Awashima Island with her grandfather, the owner of a local diving shop. She spends much of her time helping with the family business, especially after her father sustains an injury that prevents him from working fully. Her duties there range from maintaining equipment to guiding diving tours, work that fosters a deep connection to the sea and the natural environment of Uchiura. With long dark blue hair usually tied in a high ponytail and purple eyes, her image color is emerald green.
Personality wise, Kanan is known for her breezy, mature, and calm demeanor, often maintaining a stoic and laid back composure. She is an altruistic and warm hearted individual who deeply cares for her friends, frequently putting their needs above her own. This selflessness, however, can lead her to be overprotective, and she may hide difficult truths if she believes it will spare someone she loves from pain. She is also fiercely stubborn, once described by her friend Dia Kurosawa as having the inflexible nature of a stubborn old man. Despite her composed exterior, she has a sweet and soft side, evident in her love for hugs. She is known for her catchphrase Hagu shiyo, which means Lets hug, and will often embrace her friends. She also harbors unexpected fears, including a strong aversion to strange creaking sounds and a fear of heights.
Her personal history is central to her character. Two years before the main story, as a first-year student, Kanan co-founded the original school idol group Aqours with her childhood friends, Dia Kurosawa and Mari Ohara, to combat the threat of their school closing. The trio spent a year happily writing songs and choreographing dances together. However, right before a major performance in Tokyo, Mari suffered an injury. To protect Maris future and ensure she would accept a scholarship to study abroad without being held back by the group, Kanan made a painful decision on stage. She deliberately pretended to forget the lyrics and stopped singing, sabotaging the performance and causing the original Aqours to disband.
The guilt of this sacrifice caused Kanan to distance herself from Mari upon her return to Uranohoshi a year and a half later, and she initially refuses to have anything to do with school idols. This emotional barrier is broken when the truth is revealed to Mari, leading to a confrontation where a heartbroken Mari slaps Kanan and declares that she should not have decided her future for her. In a pivotal moment, Kanan responds not with anger but by opening her arms to embrace Mari, leading to a tearful reconciliation. This event allows Kanan to let go of her guilt and rejoin the newly formed Aqours alongside Mari and Dia, finally becoming the groups full nine member lineup.
Within the group, Kanan takes on the role of an elder figure and the leader of physical training. Her upbringing on the water has granted her incredible stamina, honed by morning jogs and diving, which she uses to lead the other members in rigorous practice sessions that they often find exhausting. She is talented in diving, swimming, ship handling, and astronomical observation. Academically, she struggles somewhat, partly due to her frequent absences for work and a general distaste for reading. Her relationship with the younger first-years is initially distant due to their different interests, but she finds a connection with the book-loving Hanamaru Kunikida, showing her ability to bond with others beyond her immediate circle of friends.
Throughout the story, Kanan develops from a guilt ridden loner who carries the weight of her past mistakes back into an active and supportive leader. Her character arc teaches her that protecting her friends doesnt mean making decisions for them, and that their shared dreams are more powerful when faced together. She serves as Aqours choreographer and is a central member of the sub unit AZALEA, often performing as its center. Her physical prowess and leadership are essential to the groups success, grounding them in discipline and resilience. Following her graduation, she continues to support Aqours legacy, having fully reconciled with her past and embracing the future with the same quiet strength she has always possessed.
