Description
Zenitsu Agatsuma is a young man with fair skin and downward-sloping eyes shifting from soft brown to gold. His hair, originally black, turned yellow and orange after a lightning strike during training. Standing 164.5 cm tall and weighing 58 kg, he typically wears a pale brown Demon Slayer uniform and a yellow-orange gradient haori patterned with white triangles.
Orphaned young, he fell into debt after being swindled by a woman. Former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima paid his debts and took him as a disciple. During training, Zenitsu struggled with fear and attempted to flee, resulting in the lightning incident that altered his hair. He trained alongside Kaigaku, whom he disliked but respected as a senior. Despite mastering only Thunder Breathing's first form, he perfected it and later created a seventh form, Honoikazuchi no Kami, aspiring to rival Kaigaku.
Zenitsu exhibits extreme cowardice and anxiety, frequently lamenting his Demon Slayer career will shorten his life. He often faints under duress, triggering an unconscious combat state marked by heightened precision and calmness. This state enabled him to defeat demons like the Tongue Demon and the Spider Family's Son during early missions. Despite low self-esteem, he possesses a strong sense of duty, particularly toward allies Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko. He protects Nezuko's box from Inosuke Hashibira, enduring physical assaults while citing Tanjiro's trust.
His acute hearing detects subtle auditory cues like heartbeats or demonic movements, aiding combat and awareness. This ability helped him discern Nezuko's demonic nature despite her benign behavior. Zenitsu frequently propositions women, driven by a fear of dying single, yet shows genuine affection for Nezuko, envisioning innocent dates in dreams. During the Mugen Train Arc, he resisted Lower Rank One Enmu's dream spell by recognizing the artificiality of a fantasy involving Nezuko.
Zenitsu primarily uses Thunder Breathing's First Form: Thunderclap and Flash, executing high-speed dashes and slashes. He developed variations like Sixfold and Godspeed, though the latter initially strained his legs. His combat prowess peaked in the Infinity Castle Arc when he confronted Kaigaku—now Upper Rank Six—after learning Kaigaku murdered Jigoro. Awake and enraged, Zenitsu defeated him using Honoikazuchi no Kami, a technique manifesting as a lightning dragon. He later joined the battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, sustaining severe injuries while contributing to the victory.
His relationships evolved significantly: initially antagonistic toward Inosuke, he developed mutual respect through shared battles. He deeply admired Tanjiro's compassion and Nezuko's resilience, often vowing to protect her. After Jigoro's death, Zenitsu embraced his legacy, transitioning from a reluctant warrior to a determined slayer. By the series' conclusion, he achieved physical recovery and emotional growth.
