TV Special
Description
Mad Treasure is the main antagonist of the One Piece: Heart of Gold television special. He serves as the captain of the Treasure Pirates and is known throughout the world as a notorious and highly dangerous treasure hunter. His background is that of a ruthless pirate who has made a name for himself by relentlessly pursuing valuable artifacts and treasures across the seas. He is hired by the wealthy and powerful Gild Tesoro to locate the legendary Pure Gold, a substance capable of purchasing the entire world.
Mad Treasure's personality is marked by a manic and sadistic nature. He has a distinctive laugh that sounds like “jararara” and displays a theatrical, almost gleeful cruelty when tormenting his opponents or solving puzzles. He is driven less by the monetary value of treasure and more by the thrill of the hunt and the mental challenges involved in obtaining it. He is willing to sacrifice his own crew members without hesitation if it serves his goals, showing a complete disregard for the lives of others.
His primary motivation is to secure the Pure Gold for Gild Tesoro, though his own greed and love of the chase are equally strong. He pursues the young girl Olga Myskina because she is the only person who knows the location of the Pure Gold, hidden on the lost island of Alchemi within the stomach of a giant anglerfish called Bonbori. His role in the story is that of the central obstacle the Straw Hat Pirates must overcome in order to protect Olga and claim the treasure.
Key relationships in the story include his employer, Gild Tesoro, to whom he reports and from whom he receives orders. He interacts directly with the Straw Hat Pirates, especially Luffy, Nami, Robin, and Usopp, whom he captures and forces to solve ancient riddles in exchange for their lives. He also has a past connection with Nami, who once stole a treasure from him and was nearly killed as a result. His relationship with his own crew is purely transactional; he views them as disposable tools.
Throughout the special, Mad Treasure shows no meaningful character development. He remains a single-minded villain driven by greed and a love of conquest until the end. After being defeated in combat by Luffy, he appears to fall into a sea of stomach acid while still clutching a piece of Pure Gold, but a post-credits scene shows him alive and eating dinosaur meat alongside his surviving crew members, suggesting he somehow survived.
Mad Treasure possesses a Devil Fruit ability, the Jara Jara no Mi, which allows him to generate and control chains from his own body. He can extend these chains to bind opponents, manipulate objects, or create weapons. This ability makes him a formidable combatant, especially when combined with his cunning and his willingness to use hostages. He also demonstrates a sharp mind for puzzles and traps, which he employs to test those who seek the Pure Gold. In addition to his Devil Fruit power, he is a capable physical fighter with considerable endurance, as shown by his ability to survive the acidic environment of Bonbori's stomach.
