Description
Kuroino, also called Blackie and nicknamed Bear Cat, is a large black male cat with a white crescent-shaped marking under his neck, a short tail ending in a fluffy tuft, and a sturdy, bearlike build. His narrow eyes have thin black slit pupils, which contribute to an initial impression of severity. In the neighborhood he acts as an unofficial caretaker, patrolling the streets and keeping an eye on the safety and behavior of the other cats. Despite his imposing appearance, he is patient, protective, and deeply loyal to those he considers his charges.

His main motivation is to maintain a quiet order among the local cats while passing on essential feline knowledge. This mentoring instinct becomes most evident in his relationship with Chi, the young kitten. He takes her under his wing and shows her the practical skills a cat needs to survive outdoors, from stalking and pouncing to recognizing dangers and navigating human spaces. Over time a bond of unwavering trust forms between them, and he becomes both her first true cat friend and a dependable guardian.

Kuroino’s role in the story is that of a steady, grounding presence. He is a supporting figure who guides Chi’s understanding of the wider world beyond her adoptive home, offering quiet wisdom without ever overshadowing her curiosity. As he spends more time with Chi, his initially gruff exterior softens, revealing a more gentle and encouraging side. This gradual opening up marks his personal development, strengthening his commitment to protecting not only Chi but also the harmony of the shared neighborhood. His notable abilities include impressive physical strength, keen situational awareness, territorial patrolling, and an experienced teacher’s knack for demonstrating survival skills through calm, deliberate example.
