Description
Matsugo is a supporting character in the anime RIN-NE, first appearing in the second season and continuing into the third. He is a student at Shinigami First High, an elite school for shinigami, and comes from a wealthy family. In his childhood, Matsugo was small, unhealthy, and frequently bullied because of his thick glasses, helpless demeanor, and nerdy appearance. During that time, the only person who befriended him was Rinne Rokudo, who would eat lunch with him, accompany him to the bathroom, and stand up for him when others picked on him. Matsugo became very clingy toward Rinne, and the two were close for a while.
However, as Matsugo grew older, he underwent a dramatic physical transformation. He became tall and handsome, shedding his former weak appearance. Despite this external change, his personality remained introverted and neurotic. He is highly sensitive to loneliness and rejection, often suffering from stomach aches in unfamiliar social situations. He tries to be earnest and well-mannered but struggles to make friends. After he and Rinne drifted apart, Matsugo initially harbored resentment and attempted to change himself in order to get revenge on Rinne for what he perceived as abandonment. This led to a period where he acted in a competitive or antagonistic manner toward Rinne, trying to outdo him or prove himself superior.
As the series progresses, Matsugo's attitude shifts. He begins to work hard at rekindling the friendship he and Rinne once had. However, his efforts often come across as forced or overly enthusiastic, similar to how the character Ageha pursues Rinne's attention, which frequently annoys Rinne. Matsugo's motivations are driven by a deep-seated need for connection and a desire to be accepted, stemming from his isolated childhood. He is not malicious at heart, and his actions are more about seeking validation and companionship than causing genuine harm.
In terms of role, Matsugo appears as a supporting character who sometimes serves as comic relief due to his awkward attempts at friendship and his tendency to overreact. He also participates in shinigami-related activities, such as training exercises to capture dreams or dealing with spirits. One notable event from his past involves a training exercise with Rinne where they teamed up to find and pop a devil balloon. In the third season, Matsugo invites Rinne and others to his school festival, and he is also involved in episodes where he competes with Ageha for Rinne's affection or gets into bizarre situations, such as temporarily turning into an angel.
Matsugo's key relationships center on Rinne, whom he both admires and tries to emulate. He also interacts with other characters like Ageha, with whom he occasionally competes, and Rokumon, Rinne's black cat. His relationship with Rinne is the most developed, moving from childhood friendship to rivalry and then back toward a renewed, if awkward, bond. As a shinigami student, Matsugo possesses abilities common to his kind, including the use of shinigami tools and the ability to see and interact with spirits. He is academically elite, known for his intelligence and high performance at Shinigami First High. While not a central figure, Matsugo contributes to the series' themes of friendship, growth, and overcoming past insecurities.
