Description
Hululu, also known as the Humboldt Penguin, is a Friend who appears throughout the Kemono Friends franchise. Her background is that of an idol, initially as a member of the idol unit PIP in the original mobile game before becoming a member of the third-generation idol group PPP in the anime. Her nickname, Hululu, is an onomatopoeic reference to the soft sounds that real Humboldt penguins make, reflecting her chatty and bubbly nature.
Hululu possesses a distinctive personality that can best be described as laid-back, airheaded, and prone to distraction. She has a significant tendency to space off into her own little world during conversations, often losing focus and failing to listen to what is being said around her. This drifting focus is a recurring trait, causing her to fall behind in choreography during practice and occasionally forget to attend practice sessions altogether, which prompts the other members to search for her, often finding her taking a nap. Her speech pattern is notably slower and more relaxed than the rest of her unit, and she sometimes refers to herself in the third person. Despite these tendencies, which might be perceived as a lack of reliability, she is well-taken care of by the other unit members. A notable characteristic is that she gets hungry easily, which explains her frequent requests for Japari Buns. Unlike many penguin species, the real-life Humboldt penguin lives in warm regions, and this is reflected in Hululu, as she is stated to be weak against intense cold but fine with hot weather.
Her primary motivation is her role as an aspiring idol, striving to perform successfully with her unit. Her role in the story is mainly as a supporting character and a member of PPP, contributing comedic relief through her obliviousness and participating in the group's journey to debut. In the original Nexon game, she played a more active role, helping her team secure a victory in a battle and acting as a founding member of the "Water Girls" group by convincing other Friends to join. In the anime, her role centers on her growth as an idol. Before her unit's debut concert, she meets Margay, who reassures her that her laid-back nature is not a flaw but a part of her charm, confirming that she is a worthy successor to the previous Humboldt Penguin in the idol unit. This reassurance helps build her confidence, leading to her successful debut with PPP at the waterfront concert.
Hululu has several key relationships within her unit. She has a close relationship with Southern Rockhopper Penguin, known as Rocker, who often retorts her silly actions and is tasked with searching for her when she misses practice. Despite Rocker being a bit rough on her, Hululu has stated that she likes her and praises her ability to pull herself together. Emperor Penguin also cares for her and the other PIP members, while Gentoo Penguin sometimes has difficulty finding her when it is time to practice. Her relationship with the other members of PPP is similarly supportive, as they often have to whisper reminders to her during introductions or explain situations she failed to listen to.
Hululu shows subtle development over time. While initially a source of worry for her unit due to her lack of focus, she gains reassurance from an external source like Margay, validating her personality. This allows her to move past her insecurities and successfully perform at her debut concert. Although her core personality remains that of an airhead, as seen in the second season when she instinctively mixes a dessert without commenting on it, she continues to be a beloved and functioning member of her idol group.
Regarding notable abilities, Hululu is a capable swimmer, using her penguin agility to navigate aquatic areas. In her role as an idol, she performs dances, specifically the PPP Dance, in front of playthings like microphones and speakers. In the Kemono Friends Kingdom game, her abilities are support-oriented; her Miracle attack boosts the Miracle ATK of the next Friend, and her habits can increase PATK for all Friends in combat or change how Miracles function. She is also immune to drowning when underwater. Her daily activity in the original game included practicing blown kisses in front of a mirror, a skill she felt she was still bad at.
