Description
Hinako Sakuragi is a first-year high school student and the central protagonist of her story. She originally comes from a rural, mountainous area, where she lived a life quite removed from modern technology, to the point of being unfamiliar with common electronic devices. Her birthday is April 30.

Hinako is defined by her crippling shyness, which manifests as an intense anxiety when speaking with people she does not know well. When this nervousness reaches its peak, she freezes up completely, adopting a stiff, unmoving posture that is likened to a scarecrow. This habit is a source of great frustration for her, as her dream is to stand on a stage and perform in a theater. Her desire to overcome her social anxiety and learn to speak with people more skillfully is her primary motivation for moving to Tokyo to attend high school. Despite her timidity, she is a kind-hearted and determined individual, though she can also be quite naive, even believing in the existence of Santa Claus.

Upon arriving in Tokyo, Hinako takes up residence at the Hitotose-sou, a building that functions as both a boarding house and a secondhand bookstore. She forms a theater troupe with the other residents, who become her closest friends and key relationships. These include Kuina Natsukawa, a book lover with a peculiar habit of eating pages; Mayuki Hiiragi, her older but smaller and more mature upperclassman who is an excellent cook; and Chiaki Hagino, a tall and beautiful girl also involved in acting. She also develops a significant relationship with Yua Nakajima, a classmate who initially views her as a rival but eventually warms up to her. Through her interactions and friendships with these individuals, Hinako finds a supportive environment where she can speak more normally and work towards her goals.

Over the course of the story, Hinako experiences gradual but natural development. She begins to gain more confidence in herself and her ability to perform and interact with strangers. While she may still freeze into a scarecrow pose on occasion, her determination and the encouragement of her friends allow her to improve and ultimately find success on stage.

In addition to her struggles with social anxiety, Hinako possesses several notable and unique abilities. Her most prominent trait is her inexplicable ability to communicate with animals and act as a "friend to all living things". Wild animals, from small birds and squirrels to deer, monkeys, and even bears, are drawn to her and obey her as if tamed. She can understand their speech, and she often receives help from them. Most notable are three small, yellow, bird-like creatures named Toritaro, who have been her companions since childhood. They hide in her hair and play a crucial role in helping her, often by distracting people when she enters her scarecrow state or assisting with various tasks. Her unique scarecrow pose, while a symptom of her anxiety, was actually used to her advantage back in the countryside, where she would work part-time by attracting animals to help the local farmers. She is also a fantastic singer, a talent that contributes to her being chosen for a lead role in a school play.
