Description
Beyazit, whose full name is Ulema Beyazit, is a significant character from the anime Altair: A Record of Battles. He serves as the 4th generation sultan of the Mizrak Stratocracy and is a younger brother to the impulsive and ambitious Sultan Al-Kaplan Balaban. Physically, Beyazit is depicted as a young man with a slim build and a somewhat more delicate appearance than his older brother. He has short, wavy black hair and soft facial features that complement his gentle disposition, though some official artworks give him blue hair.

In stark contrast to his temperamental brother, Beyazit is defined by his calm, thoughtful, and peace-loving personality. He possesses a high degree of patience and a sound mind that is not easily clouded by personal judgment, which makes him a far more effective and rational decision-maker than Balaban. Beyazit deeply despises violence and will go to great lengths to prevent it or minimize its occurrence whenever possible. His friendly and unassuming nature allows him to build rapport with a wide variety of people, including those who hold different viewpoints from his own. This core personality trait sets him on a tragic collision course with his brother's ambitions.

Beyazit’s primary motivation throughout the story is the protection of his homeland, the Mizrak Stratocracy, and the well-being of its people. He becomes deeply concerned when his brother Balaban, fueled by a desire for independence from Greater Türkiye, is manipulated by the Balt-Rhein Empire into a treasonous alliance. Recognizing the catastrophic consequences of his brother's path, Beyazit takes the drastic step of approaching Zağanos Pasha to become one of his spies. He does this not out of personal ambition, but as a measure to safeguard his nation and prevent Balaban from making an irreversible mistake. His ultimate goal is a tragic one: to stop his brother's rebellion for the greater good, even at a terrible personal cost.

In the narrative, Beyazit plays a pivotal role in the civil war arc. Initially introduced as a member of Zağanos's spy network, he secretly meets with the protagonist, Mahmut, to provide crucial information and express his opposition to the rogue sultans. His role becomes central to the resolution of the conflict during the Battle at the Unusual Rock Formations. Beyazit demonstrates his strategic importance by deploying a revolutionary new weapon, the Şark Yay, a type of matchlock gun. He and his forces use these firearms to trap and decisively eliminate the rebellious soldiers, culminating in a face-to-face confrontation with his own brother, Balaban. In a sorrowful and pivotal scene, Beyazit fatally shoots Balaban, tearfully holding his brother as he dies and proclaiming that he loved him more than anyone else. This act, born of duty and love, is the defining moment of his character.

Beyazit’s key relationships are primarily defined by his family. His bond with his older brother, Balaban, is the most complex and crucial aspect of his character. He loves his brother deeply, having spent most of his youth by Balaban's side, and his betrayal is not one of malice but of tragic necessity. He is also the uncle of Armut Ayse, the daughter of his sister Nilufer Fatma, and is shown to have a cooperative and mentoring relationship with her, as they oppose Balaban together. He shares a strategic alliance with the protagonist, Mahmut, and is a contact for the spy network led by Zağanos Pasha.

Beyazit undergoes significant development from a concerned and loyal brother to a reluctant, decisive leader. He is initially haunted by the need to act against his family but ultimately proves himself to be a more virtuous and clear-headed ruler than his brother. He is forced to tuck away his personal love and emotions to carry out a plan that ensures the survival of his nation, demonstrating a profound and painful maturation. His quiet, peace-loving nature is not a sign of weakness but a source of immense inner strength that allows him to make the ultimate sacrifice for his people.

In terms of abilities, Beyazit is not a frontline warrior in the same mold as his brother, but he possesses formidable skills. He is proficient in swordsmanship, having personally trained his niece Ayse. His most notable strategic ability is his mastery and deployment of the Şark Yay, a powerful early firearm. He is identified as one of only 77 people in the Rumeliana region capable of using this weapon, which he commands to devastating effect on the battlefield. Furthermore, similar to his brother, he has the leadership skills necessary to command his own variant of the elite Yeniçeri soldiers.
