Description
Berserker of Black is the Servant of Caules Forvedge Yggdmillennia in the Great Holy Grail War. Her true identity is the artificial lifeform created by Victor Frankenstein, often referred to as Frankenstein's monster, based on Mary Shelley's novel. She was summoned using the blueprints for an ideal human as a catalyst. In her legend, the scientist Victor Frankenstein sought to create the original couple from the Bible, Adam and Eve. He first constructed Eve, intending for her to give birth to Adam. However, the being that awoke was considered a failure due to her inability to properly express emotions, leading to her being disassembled and abandoned. Over time, she repaired herself and pursued her creator, seeking a mate. After being rejected repeatedly, she killed those close to him. Victor fled to the South Pole and died in madness, and the monster ultimately built a pyre for herself in the far north.
Berserker of Black appears as a lovely young girl with empty eyes, clad in a white dress reminiscent of a wedding gown, and carries a giant mace. Her long hair often covers her eyes. Despite the traditional depiction of the monster as a tall, grotesque man, she more closely resembles the Bride of Frankenstein at first glance, which causes her Master to question Victor's perception of beauty and foulness. She gives off the impression of a large breed of dog that never wags its tail but still desperately approaches people.
Due to her Mad Enhancement skill, her linguistic ability is severely limited, with responses mostly consisting of grunts, moans, and head-shaking. She can only speak in very rare circumstances. However, she is able to differentiate friend from foe and communicate simple ideas. Beneath her shy and silent exterior lies a high intelligence and empathetic capability. Fearful of her own monstrous nature, she conceals these traits, with sorrow being the one emotion she notably lacks. Unlike the typical image of a rampaging Berserker, she prefers quiet activities like picking flowers in the castle's courtyard garden or staring at the sky. She is extremely mindful of energy conservation, known to unplug a computer left on or turn off lights in a bathroom that her Master left burning.
Her primary motivation and wish upon the Holy Grail is to obtain a mate of the same kind as her. This is not driven by an instinctive desire but by a logical reason: she wishes to understand love and become a proper human. She has specific criteria for this mate; the homunculi of the Yggdmillennia family are not sufficient, as she desires a being created from corpses like herself.
In the story, Berserker of Black has a close and functional relationship with her Master, Caules. He is a relatively meek and immature magus, but they come to a mutual understanding. He apologizes to her after revealing her true name to other Servants, and she feels assured knowing he understands the nature of the Holy Grail War. When he asks her to help correct the details of her legend, she bows earnestly. She shows displeasure when he suggests a homunculus as a potential mate but approves of his reasoning for not having a personal wish. At one point, she gives him a flower. There is also a part of her that becomes attached to the homunculus Sieg. She dislikes the overly friendly Rider of Black, Astolfo, rarely responding to his attempts to speak with her.
During the Great Holy Grail War, she participates in several key battles. She and Saber of Black are deployed to capture the rogue Berserker of Red, encountering Rider and Archer of Red. Despite a numerical advantage, they are unable to gain an edge until Archer of Black provides support. During the main battle at Castle Yggdmillennia, she faces Shirou Kotomine, the Master of Red, who is accompanied by Caster of Red. He attempts to recruit her, but she refuses and attacks. She is later trapped in an illusion of her past by Caster's Noble Phantasm but is freed by her Master using a Command Spell. Her most significant moment comes when she faces Saber of Red, who is overpowering her allies. Realizing she cannot match Saber in strength, she decides to use her second Noble Phantasm, Blasted Tree, a massive suicide attack that releases all her gathered electricity at the cost of her own life. Her Master painfully allows this, supporting her with Command Spells. Although the attack lands, Saber of Red survives due to a Command Spell from her own Master. Berserker of Black perishes as a result.
Berserker of Black possesses several notable abilities tied to her nature as a living electrical creature. Her Class Skill is Mad Enhancement, which trades linguistic ability for enhanced physical parameters. Her Personal Skill, Galvanism, allows for the unrestricted conversion of magical energy and bio-electricity. This makes her immune to non-material thaumaturgical attacks, such as energy beams, which are converted to electricity and discharged. This absorbed electricity can be used for rapid self-repair and physical reinforcement. Another skill, Overload, allows her to intentionally boost her power beyond safe limits, converting stored mana into electricity at the cost of damaging her own body. Her primary weapon is a large mace named Bridal Chest, Maiden's Chastity. This mace contains her reactor core and heart, functioning as a perpetual motion machine that continuously gathers wasted energy to power her. Her final and most powerful Noble Phantasm is Blasted Tree, Lightning Branch of Crucifixion. This suicide attack involves planting the fin of her mace into the ground and releasing all limiters, discharging all gathered electricity into the environment in the shape of a towering tree. Its use results in permanent deactivation, though there is a low probability of a second Frankenstein's monster being materialized in the aftermath.
