Description
Berserker of Red is the Berserker-class Servant summoned by the Red Faction in the Great Holy Grail War. His true identity is Spartacus, the legendary Thracian gladiator who led a massive slave rebellion against the Roman Republic. In life, he escaped from a gladiator training camp with seventy-eight companions, repelled a Roman force of three thousand soldiers, and built an army of seventy thousand that defeated Roman forces in multiple battles. His rebellion ultimately ended in defeat, and his body was said to have been torn apart beyond recognition, never recovered from the battlefield. This final loss became his first and only defeat, cementing his legacy as an enduring symbol of hope for the oppressed.

Spartacus is driven by a singular, unwavering principle: to revolt against all oppressors and protect the oppressed. He never questions the belief that enduring suffering is a fundamental strength of humanity. His personality is defined by an extreme form of rebellion that borders on the absolute. Despite possessing an EX-rank Mad Enhancement, he is capable of fluent speech and can express complex ideas, such as stating that those who are bound are strong because they accumulate anger and sadness until freed. However, true mutual understanding is impossible with him. He is fixated on always choosing the most difficult path and never listens to the strategies or commands of others. Rather than disobeying, he simply cannot comprehend any course of action that is not his own. This makes him effectively uncontrollable, and it is widely said that his defeat is certain from the moment of his summoning in ordinary Holy Grail Wars.

His behavior in battle is unnerving to allies and enemies alike. He fights with a constant, ecstatic smile, whether he is striking an opponent or being struck himself. He derives a kind of joy from the pain and trials of combat, as the battlefield is the only place where the weak and the strong exist in direct opposition. This perpetual grin is described as nightmarish, chilling even powerful warriors such as the Red Faction's Lancer and Archer, and frightening a Rider who had faced giants and beasts without fear. The only thing that wipes the smile from his face is the concept of being enslaved, which instead transforms his expression into one of murderous rage. He has no wish for the Holy Grail; his dearest desire is simply to proceed to fields of battle where he can endlessly rebel against the powerful.

In the story of Fate/Apocrypha, Berserker of Red is originally summoned by a Master named Deimlet Pentel, though the Red Faction's coordinator, Shirou Kotomine, assumes command before the Master even meets the Servant. Spartacus frequently rampages in search of adversaries for his rebellion, and Caster of Red, seemingly taking pity on him, reveals the location of the Black Faction's headquarters in Trifas. Ignoring all arguments from his faction, Spartacus immediately begins a solo march toward the enemy fortress, taking the most direct route. Archer of Red and Rider of Red attempt to stop him, but their efforts are futile. He single-handedly destroys waves of homunculi and golems sent by the Black Faction. He engages Rider of Black, who uses his Noble Phantasm to force Spartacus's legs into spirit form, causing him to collapse. Even while immobilized and buried under dozens of multi-ton golems, he continues to rip through them and crawl toward the castle.

His rampage is finally halted by Lancer of Black, Vlad III, who impales him with multiple stakes from the Noble Phantasm Kazikli Bey, pinning him in place without destroying his spiritual core. Despite being pierced and unable to move, Spartacus continues to grin viciously and declares his intent to rebel. He is captured by the Black Faction and forced into a contract with Caster of Black, Avicebron. This shift in allegiance is not a result of persuasion or betrayal but simply the circumstances of his unyielding nature. His key relationships are defined not by camaraderie but by opposition. He views the Red Faction members not as enemies but as temporary non-oppressors, while the Black Faction represents the oppressors he seeks to destroy. He cannot form a functional partnership with any Master, as most magi inherently qualify as oppressors in his eyes.

Spartacus shows little traditional character development, as his nature is fixed and absolute. However, his role highlights the tragic yet noble core of his madness. Lancer of Black, after witnessing his unbreakable will, concludes that Spartacus's rebellion embodies a noble spirit that refuses to accept the strong trampling the weak. He fights not out of altruism for the weak but for a world where all are equal. His resolve to keep moving forward in the face of all logic transcends simple hatred or conviction, carving an unbreakable certainty onto his heart. This makes him a fool, but not a delusional one, as he has forgotten that his own suffering led only to a cruel death.

Berserker of Red possesses several notable abilities that make him exceptionally dangerous in prolonged combat. His Mad Enhancement is ranked EX, which provides a significant boost to his parameters but deprives him of most of his reason, fixating him on the most difficult choices. His personal skill, The Honor of the Battered, reduces the magical energy cost required to heal his wounds to one-quarter of the normal amount. This synergizes perfectly with his constantly active Noble Phantasm, Crying Warmonger: The Howl of the Wounded Beast. This Noble Phantasm converts a portion of the damage he receives into magical energy, which is then stored within his body and used to enhance his physical abilities and regenerate from injuries. The efficiency of this conversion increases as his physical condition worsens. When he is pushed to the verge of death, the accumulated energy becomes enormous. However, this power has a critical drawback: it cannot be shut off. As he absorbs more damage, his body begins to over-regenerate, growing into a massive, grotesque form that eventually becomes too heavy to support itself. This culminates in a self-destruction that unleashes a catastrophic explosion comparable to an Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm, capable of annihilating half of the Yggdmillennia fortress and covering an entire battlefield.
