Description
Kairi Shishigo is the Master of Red Saber, Mordred, in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. He is a 32-year-old freelancer who operates outside the traditional structures of the Mage's Association, working as a bounty hunter and a necromancer. As the seventh-generation head of the Shishigo family, his history is marked by tragedy; a curse activated in his generation prevents him from producing heirs. In an attempt to circumvent this and continue the family lineage, a distant relative was adopted as his daughter to receive his family's Magic Crest, but she died during the transplant procedure, a loss that continues to haunt him.

In terms of appearance, Kairi possesses a fearsome and intimidating look. He has a large, muscular build, stands 182 cm tall, and has sharp eyes and a face marked with scars. He typically wears a black jacket made from the hide of magical beasts and dark sunglasses, with a thick scent of blood and gunpowder clinging to him from his years on battlefields. This appearance often causes him trouble, such as being frequently stopped by police or avoided by other mages, a contrast to his more scholarly look in his youth.

His personality is a blend of pragmatism and a surprisingly warm, paternal nature. While he has the demeanor of a hardened mercenary, he is also a man who reflects on his actions and avoids unnecessary risks. He is known for being level-headed, observant, and flexible, which allows him to effectively manage and cooperate with his hot-headed and rebellious Servant, Mordred. Despite his gruff exterior, he has a deep, unspoken affection for his deceased adopted daughter, and he always carries an old photograph of the two of them in his pocket. He does not view his role as a Master with the same formal dignity as others; instead, his relationship with Mordred is casual and companionable, akin to two "colleagues" or a bickering father and daughter.

Kairi's motivations for participating in the war are rooted in his past. His stated wish for the Holy Grail is the prosperity of his clan, a pragmatic desire befitting a mage. However, his true, desperate wish is to undo the death of his adopted daughter. He joined the Great Holy Grail War with a sense of having found a place to die, wandering the world as a mercenary with little regard for his own life after her death.

In the story, Kairi is summoned by the Mage's Association to fight for the Red Faction against the Black Faction of Yggdmillennia. Using a fragment of the Round Table as a catalyst, he successfully summons Mordred and quickly deduces her true identity as the rebellious knight. While both are nominally on the Red team, they share a mutual distrust of their faction leader, Shirou Kotomine, and decide to act independently for most of the war, operating from a base in the catacombs of Sighisoara. They engage in several skirmishes with the Black Faction, proving to be a formidable pair. After discovering the true, world-altering plan of Shirou Kotomine, Kairi and Mordred ally with the forces opposing him. In the final battle, during a confrontation with Red Assassin, Semiramis, Mordred is incapacitated by a lethal Hydra poison. Kairi, knowing it would mean his own death, uses the last of his energy to inject Mordred with a serum, saving her life at the cost of his own.

The central and most significant relationship in Kairi's life is with his Servant, Mordred. The two share a profound bond based on mutual understanding and respect. They are both outcasts who rebelled against their destined roles: Kairi, a mage who abandoned his family, and Mordred, a knight who betrayed her king. Their interactions are characterized by playful bickering and pragmatic partnership, with Kairi often acting as the voice of reason to temper Mordred's reckless aggression. This relationship allows him to re-experience a form of fatherhood, while Mordred finds an accepting companion, and together they find a sense of belonging they were denied in life. Other relationships include his contractor, Rocco Belfeban of the Mage's Association, from whom he received his catalyst and demanded an advance payment of a Hydra specimen.

While he was originally a promising researcher, Kairi left the Clock Tower after three years to become a freelance mage, or "magus killer". His notable abilities lie in his specialized field of necromancy. He is a specialist in the processing and use of corpses and animal parts to create magical tools, known for their high quality and stability. His practical combat experience is vast, rivaling even that of the centuries-old magus Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia. Kairi's magical arsenal reflects his pragmatic and gruesome specialty. He uses a shortened double-barreled shotgun not as a firearm, but as a medium for his magical bullets. His other tools include hand grenades made from preserved hearts and other items crafted from animal eyes and hands. He also successfully processed the corpse of a Hydra larva, which he received as payment, into a potent and venomous weapon.
