Description
Mordred, the Saber of the Red faction in Fate/Apocrypha, is the knight of rebellion who brought the Arthurian legend to its end. She is a homunculus created by Morgan le Fay using the blood of King Arthur, making her both the biological child and nephew of the King of Knights. Because she was artificially created, Mordred possessed an astonishing growth rate and a lifespan far shorter than a normal human’s, beginning her service as a knight of the Round Table only a few years after her birth. She was raised as a male heir to the throne, instructed to conceal her true status and obey the king.
At her core, Mordred is driven by an intense yearning for recognition and paternal love from King Arthur. Despite being told by Morgan that she was destined to defeat the king and take the throne, Mordred’s earliest and deepest feelings were not hatred but fierce adoration and a desperate desire for approval. She dreamed of being acknowledged as Arthur’s rightful successor. However, the king, whose entire being was devoted to ruling as the purest ideal of a monarch, could not see Mordred’s individual humanity or recognize her as a suitable heir. This rejection was misinterpreted by Mordred as disgust for her origins, fueling a powerful mix of anger, love, and obsession that defined her rebellion. Her rebellion was not simply a bid for power but a tragic, confused outburst of a child seeking a father’s love and being met with indifference. She ultimately realized that the king understood no one’s heart, but this clarity came too late.
In Fate/Apocrypha, Mordred is summoned by the mage Kairi Shishigou as a Servant of the Red faction during the conflict in Trifas. She is a formidable and impulsive frontline combatant, embodying a doctrine of violence and supremacy. Her personality is brash, rebellious, and blunt, often expressing disdain for authority figures. She is deeply prideful and haughty, but this bravado masks her inner vulnerability and insecurity. Despite her rough demeanor, she possesses a certain knightly pride, refusing to involve innocent bystanders or employ underhanded strategies that betray her code. She deals with her master as an equal and values honesty and directness, shunning the manipulative nature of typical mages.
Her key relationship is unquestionably with King Arthur, whom she both idolizes and seeks to surpass. Her feelings toward her father are a tangled knot of hatred, admiration, and longing that she herself cannot fully untangle. Her bond with her master Kairi Shishigou is also significant; through him, she begins to explore feelings of teamwork and loyalty beyond her obsession. In the story, Mordred engages in several pivotal battles, including confrontations with Black Assassin Jack the Ripper and a fierce struggle against Black Rider Astolfo and Black Berserker Frankenstein, which she wins despite suffering severe damage. Her arc culminates in a dramatic confrontation where she must face her own identity and the nature of her desires. She eventually finds a form of resolution, coming to terms with her one-sided feelings toward her father and mastering her abilities independent of that emotional turmoil.
Mordred’s abilities reflect her heritage as Arthur’s child. She possesses a high rank of Mana Burst, allowing her to infuse her body and weapon with magical energy to enhance her combat capabilities, granting her power comparable to the King of Knights. Her Instinct gives her the ability to sense the most advantageous course of action in battle, refining her reflexes and combat awareness. She also has Magic Resistance that nullifies incantations of three verses or fewer and makes even high-level thaumaturgy difficult to affect her, as well as the Riding skill to handle most creatures and vehicles below the rank of Phantasmal Beasts.
Her primary Noble Phantasm is Clarent, the Sword of Brilliant Radiance. Originally stored in Arthur’s armory as a symbol of succession to the throne, it was a beautiful sword valued equally with Excalibur. Because Mordred stole it without understanding its significance, the sword’s rank dropped. When she unleashes its true power, it transforms into Clarent Blood Arthur, an anti-army Noble Phantasm that manifests as a calamitous demonic sword stained with crimson-black blood. Upon activation, she fires a devastating straight line of red lightning from the blade, the result of channeling her amplified hatred and magical energy through the sword’s amplification function. She also possesses the Secret of Pedigree, a helmet gifted by Morgan that conceals her true identity, Noble Phantasm, and personal skills from being read by enemies, though she must remove it to fully activate Clarent Blood Arthur. This helmet, along with her armor, provides high defense against magecraft and external interference.
