Description
Berserker of Black, also known as Berserker Negra, is the Servant of Caules Forvedge Yggdmillennia in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. Her true identity is the creature from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the artificial lifeform created by the scientist Victor Frankenstein.
Her background differs significantly from the traditional novel. In the world of Fate, Victor Frankenstein did not seek to create a male Adam first, but instead created Eve, intending for her to give birth to her male counterpart. Although she was given a beautiful appearance, her emotional and psychological development was flawed. Acting out of an innocent, childlike lack of understanding, she once killed a dog and offered its heart to her creator as a gift, believing it to be beautiful. Terrified by her actions, Victor dismantled her and fled. While she was able to reassemble herself, she was left alone to explore the world and develop her own emotions. She eventually tracked her creator down, begging him to create a companion for her so she would no longer be isolated. When he refused, her despair turned to rage, and she murdered his loved ones. Victor chased her to the Arctic, where he died of madness, and the creature, left with no one left to hate, built a funeral pyre for herself and perished in the flames.
In appearance, Berserker is a pale, quiet young woman wearing a white dress. She carries a massive mace-like weapon that acts as her Noble Phantasm, and her long hair often covers her eyes. Because she is summoned into the Berserker class, Mad Enhancement has stripped away most of her ability to speak, limiting her to grunts, groans, and simple gestures. However, this does not reflect her true intelligence. She possesses a high capacity for logical and empathetic thought, but her difficulty with expression and her fear of being seen as a monster cause her to remain in a shy, silent state.
Her personality is defined by a contrast between her violent potential and a gentle, almost domestic nature. While she is a formidable warrior, she prefers peaceful activities like picking flowers in the garden or looking at the sky. She is surprisingly frugal and conscious of energy conservation, turning off lights her Master leaves on or unplugging electronics. She dislikes the overly familiar Rider of Black, usually ignoring his attempts at conversation. Her deepest wish, carried over from her life, is to obtain a companion who is the same kind of being as herself. She is not interested in the homunculi created by her allies, as they are not made by her creator. This wish to have an Adam to her Eve is her reason for seeking the Holy Grail.
Within the story, Berserker is initially deployed in the battle to capture the Red Faction's Berserker, fighting against Rider and Archer of Red. Her most crucial role and significant development come from her relationship with her Master, Caules. Unlike her creator, Caules makes a genuine effort to understand her. He recites her legend to her, correctly deducing her wish for a companion. He apologizes for revealing her true name to the other Servants and asks for her help in correcting the details of her story to better understand her. In response, she bows sincerely to him, marking the beginning of a deep and trusting bond.
Throughout the war, she becomes increasingly attached to Caules, wanting to protect him. Her character arc culminates in her final battle against Saber of Red, Mordred. After losing her arm in the fight, she uses a Command Spell from Caules to empower her final attack. She drives her weapon into the ground and unleashes her Noble Phantasm, Blasted Tree, a devastating lightning strike from the sky that severely injures Saber of Red. This is a suicide attack that consumes her own spiritual core, and she fades away on the battlefield, having given her all for her Master.
Her notable abilities stem from her nature as an artificial lifeform created by electricity. She can generate and manipulate powerful electrical currents, which she channels through her large mace. Her primary offensive ability involves discharging this accumulated lightning into her opponents. Her most powerful ability is her Noble Phantasm, Blasted Tree, which requires her to plant her weapon into the ground and sacrifice her own life to call down a colossal lightning strike capable of obliterating most targets. Even with her Mad Enhancement restricting her speech, she retains the high-level strategic thinking to differentiate friend from foe and execute complex combat maneuvers.
