Description
Lancer Negro is the Lancer-class Servant of the Red Faction in the Great Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha. His true name is Karna, a hero from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata and the son of the sun god Surya and the human princess Kunti. Abandoned at birth due to his mother’s fear and later adopted by a charioteer, Karna grew up in a low social caste but rose to become a peerless warrior. He was known as the Hero of Charity, a man who never refused a request made of him, which ultimately led to the loss of his golden armor and earrings, divine protections that granted him near-invulnerability. In the war, Karna was originally summoned by one of the puppet Masters of the Red Faction, but after their consciousness was seized, he reluctantly served under the priest Shirou Kotomine solely to protect those original Masters. He never fully acknowledged Shirou as his Master and remained aloof, obeying only as a necessity.

Karna’s personality is marked by a calm, thoughtful, and noble demeanor that often comes across as cold or callous because he speaks plainly and sees through all deception. He respects all people, even his enemies, viewing each individual as a flower with their own worth, yet his blunt honesty frequently causes others to misinterpret his intentions. He struggles with communication, having been told by a previous Master that he does not speak too much but too little, and he continually tries to improve in this regard. Karna is driven by no personal wish for the Holy Grail; he was summoned purely to lend his power and carries himself with a saintly sense of duty and loyalty.

His role in the story is as one of the Red Faction’s most formidable combatants, possessing power and skill on par with Achilles. He engages in key battles against the Black Faction, most notably withstanding repeated attacks from the Lancer of Black, a feat no other Lancer could have accomplished. He recognizes in Siegfried a pure warrior anguished by duty, a mirror of his own past rivalry with the legendary archer Arjuna. Karna’s key relationships include his fraught connection with Shirou Kotomine, his deep-seated rivalry with his half-brother Arjuna, and his mutual respect with Siegfried. Throughout the war, he remains a stoic and loyal soldier, showing little development in terms of changing his worldview but demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his principles, even when it leads to his death in battle.

Karna’s notable abilities stem from his divine heritage. He wears the golden armor Kavacha and Kundala, a Noble Phantasm that renders him almost immune to physical damage and greatly reduces magical harm. His main weapon is the spear Vasavi Shakti, an anti-divine Noble Phantasm that can kill even gods but can only be used once after he discards his armor. He also wields the Brahmastra Kundala, an anti-country projectile that in his Lancer class manifests as a spear-like attack with the force of a nuclear weapon. His Mana Burst (Flames) skill coats his body and weapons in blazing flames, allowing him to fight with explosive power. Additionally, Karna possesses the skills Discernment of the Poor, which gives him insight into others’ true natures, and Uncrowned Arms Mastery, which conceals his true combat rank until his identity is revealed. His high mana supply in this Grail War lets him fight at full throttle, making him a devastating presence on the battlefield.
