Description
Leonardo Bistario Harway is the Master of Saber in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War depicted in Fate/Extra Last Encore. He is the heir to the Harway family, which controls sixty percent of the wealth in the real world. Born as the younger half-brother of Julius B. Harway, Leo was identified as having great potential at the age of three and was subsequently subjected to rigorous conditioning. This included repeated surgeries and a sound thaumaturgical process that directly burned knowledge into his brain, molding him into a near-perfect ruler from childhood. As a result, his upbringing reinforced a sense of absolute superiority, and he was raised to lack normal human emotions, though he retains a calm and polite demeanor.
Leo’s primary motivation for participating in the Holy Grail War is not personal ambition but a conviction that the Holy Grail poses a threat to humanity. He seeks to secure it in order to prevent conflict and destabilization, aiming to guarantee a stable, managed society that can ensure human survival for the next millennium. He views himself as a king sent by the heavens, one who must discard personal desire to fulfill this role. Leo approaches the War with unwavering confidence, openly using his Servant’s true name and showing no concern for subtlety or tactical concealment, as he believes his victory is predetermined by his inherent superiority.
In the narrative of Fate/Extra Last Encore, Leo appears as the strongest Master in the history of the Holy Grail War, acting as the final opponent for the protagonist Hakuno Kishinami. His Servant is Gawain, the Saber of the Round Table, with whom he shares a strong rapport rooted in their shared ideals of kingship. Leo is also the younger brother of Julius, a relationship that carries emotional weight but is defined by Leo’s role as the chosen heir. Within the broader Fate/Extra storyline, Leo initially lacks the ability to understand defeat or loss, but after being defeated by the protagonist, he learns his own imperfection and achieves the status of a true king, even as he perishes in that moment. In the alternate route of Fate/Extra CCC, though his memories are sealed, he retains his optimistic nature and supports the protagonist while trapped in the old school building.
Leo’s abilities as a Master are among the highest possible, with all parameters maxed out. His inborn talent, including powerful magic circuits, was further enhanced by his intense education. While he is not the most skilled in offensive code casts or raw computation when compared to other top Masters such as Rin Tohsaka or Rani VIII, his overall balance and strategic dominance make him virtually unbeatable in a direct confrontation. He embodies a philosophy of stagnation and defense, standing in contrast to the protagonist who represents change and offense. Despite his emotionally detached exterior, Leo is described as possessing an astounding level of kindness and empathy, a contradiction he has resolved through his upbringing, enabling him to act as a benevolent ruler without personal desire.
