Description
Li Shuwen is a Servant in the anime Fate/Extra Last Encore, initially summoned as an Assassin-class Servant by his Master, Julius B. Harwey. His true name is that of a historical Chinese martial artist who lived from 1864 to 1934, a master of the Bajiquan style who was known as God Spear Li and was said to have never needed to strike the same opponent twice. During his life, he trained bodyguards for figures such as Mao Zedong. In the story of Last Encore, when Julius refuses to be deleted from the Moon Cell program, he uses Command Seals taken from another defeated Master, which causes Li Shuwen to lose his sanity and change his class to the Berserker class.
As a person, Li Shuwen embodies the ideal of the consummate martial artist. In his Assassin form, he is calm, composed, and mentally mature, maintaining his composure in all situations and stabilizing the mind of his Master. He is disciplined and operates with a sense of honor, following his Master's commands while pursuing the perfection of his martial art. However, when forced into the Berserker class by the corrupted Command Seals, he loses all rationality and becomes a ferocious, mindless attacker driven by violent instinct. His core motivation as a warrior remains the pursuit of a single, perfect strike that leaves no need for a second, a philosophy that defines his entire approach to combat.
In the narrative of Fate/Extra Last Encore, Li Shuwen serves as an antagonist during the fifth round of the Holy Grail War. He is a direct threat to the protagonist Hakuno Kishinami, as his Master Julius targets the protagonist early on. Li Shuwen's presence is menacing because his fighting style is lethal and his Noble Phantasm is a guaranteed kill under normal circumstances. After transitioning to the Berserker class, he becomes even more dangerous, though his actions become less strategic and more chaotic.
His key relationship is with his Master, Julius B. Harwey. Julius initially respects Li Shuwen's skill, but his desperation to survive leads him to corrupt his Servant, transforming him from a disciplined assassin into a mindless berserker. This relationship highlights the tragic aspect of Li Shuwen's role in the story: a master of martial arts who loses his control and sense of self due to his Master's actions. In broader Fate series lore, he has also appeared in other works, such as Fate/EXTELLA where he is scouted by Nero and pledges his allegiance to her, showing a sense of honor and loyalty that contrasts with his fate in Last Encore.
His development in Last Encore is primarily a fall. He begins as a calm, lethal assassin and deteriorates into a berserker stripped of reason. This change emphasizes the tragedy of a warrior whose discipline is overridden by external forces.
Li Shuwen's notable abilities are centered entirely on his martial arts mastery. He possesses the skill Presence Concealment, which is not magical but rather a technique derived from Sphere Boundary, allowing him to vanish from perception even to those who rely on magecraft. He has the Chinese Martial Arts skill, specifically Bajiquan, at an exceptionally high rank, which grants him the ability to ignore invincibility and deal immense critical damage. His ultimate technique, which functions as his Noble Phantasm, is No Second Strike. This is not a weapon but the sublimation of his martial arts into a single, decisive killing blow. Li Shuwen uses qi to create a domain around himself that overwhelms his opponent's senses and nerves, causing shock death rather than physical trauma. The technique is a one-hit kill, and even a strike meant to restrain is enough to take a life. In the Berserker class, he retains this lethal technique but loses the precision and control to use it strategically.
