TV-Series
Description
Nero Claudius, also known as Saber or Red Saber, is the Saber-class Servant chosen by Hakuno Kishinami in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War depicted in Fate/Extra Last Encore. Her true name is Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, the fifth emperor of the Roman Empire, reimagined as a young woman in the Fate universe. Her historical counterpart is remembered as a tyrant whose life was marked by conspiracy, political maneuvering, and eventual downfall, but the Fate version reframes her narrative to emphasize her humanity, artistic passion, and tragic fate. She is summoned in her prime, before the full decline of her reign, and she possesses a Chaotic Good alignment.
Nero appears as a short, curvy young woman with pale skin, yellowish-blonde hair, and bright lime-green eyes. She wears a revealing red-and-white dress with military-inspired elements, reflecting both her imperial status and her role as a warrior. Her demeanor is theatrical, flamboyant, and overwhelmingly self-confident. She introduces herself as a supreme genius and an artist, believing that her very existence is a work of art. She speaks with grand flourish and expects admiration and praise from those around her. Despite her egotism, she is not malicious. She possesses a cheerful openheartedness, a generous nature, and a childlike simplicity. She values beauty above all else, considering it her unconditional standard of justice. She loves beautiful things, including pretty boys and handsome elders, and especially beautiful girls. This aesthetic principle governs her actions and her judgments of others.
Her motivations are rooted in her desire to live life to the fullest and to be recognized as a brilliant ruler and performer. She seeks the adoration of her people and wishes to create a world filled with beauty and passion. In the Holy Grail War, she fights not merely for survival or victory, but to prove her worth and to pursue a wish that aligns with her ideals. She is deeply proud and refuses to sell herself cheaply, contracting only with a master she deems a genius on her own level.
In the story of Fate/Extra Last Encore, Nero serves as the Servant of Hakuno Kishinami, a master who awakens with amnesia in the digital world of SE.RA.PH. She acts as Hakuno’s guide, protector, and companion throughout the brutal tournament. She is fiercely loyal to her master once she has approved of them, and she does not criticize their inexperience. Instead, she encourages them and rejoices in their shared victories. Her role is central to the narrative, as her relationship with Hakuno drives much of the emotional and thematic weight of the series.
Nero’s key relationships include her bond with Hakuno, which evolves from a formal contract into a deep mutual trust and affection. She also interacts with other Servants and Masters in the war, often with her characteristic blend of arrogance and charm. Her sense of beauty and her pride sometimes put her at odds with others, but she is not cruel or petty. She is capable of genuine kindness and respect toward those she considers worthy.
Throughout the story, Nero shows development as she confronts her own historical legacy and the darker aspects of her past. She is aware that she is remembered as a tyrant, and there is an underlying self-doubt beneath her confident exterior. Her journey with Hakuno allows her to redefine her own identity and to find meaning beyond the judgment of history. She grows from a self-centered emperor into a more reflective and emotionally open individual, while still retaining her essential flamboyance and passion.
Nero’s notable abilities reflect both her imperial authority and her artistic nature. As a Saber-class Servant, she wields a sword with exceptional skill, boasting overwhelmingly well-balanced fighting strength. Her magical resistance is low for her class because she herself has no innate resistance to magic. She has a skill called Imperial Privilege at EX rank, which allows her to temporarily acquire skills she does not originally possess, such as Riding, Swordsmanship, Fine Arts, Charisma, and Military Tactics, simply by asserting that she has them. At this rank, she can even acquire abilities that would normally be a burden, such as Divinity. Another skill is Headache Affliction, a curse inherited from her past life that causes chronic headaches, reducing the success rate of mental-based abilities and making it difficult for her to fully demonstrate her talent for the fine arts. She also possesses Invictus Spiritus, a skill born from the anecdote of her death, which grants her the ability to survive multiple fatal blows, reflecting the story that she briefly opened her eyes after death to thank a soldier.
Her Noble Phantasm is Aestus Domus Aurea, the Golden Theater of Passion. It is an anti-formation Noble Phantasm that recreates the Domus Aurea, the grand theater Nero personally designed and built in Rome during her lifetime. It is a great magecraft that resembles a Reality Marble but is constructed on top of the existing world, allowing it to be maintained for a long time. Within this theater, Nero can control the environment, weaken her opponents, and impose her own rules. While the theater is deployed, she can also use a special sword technique called Laus Saint Claudius. The Noble Phantasm embodies her belief in her own artistic and imperial vision, turning the battlefield into a stage where she is the star performer.
