Description
Fumimaro Ayanokouji is a 28-year-old police inspector serving with the Kyoto Prefectural Police Headquarters, where he holds the rank of警部. He comes from a noble family, a trait that has earned him the nickname Inspector Ojaru or the Noble Inspector. Ayanokouji is known for being consistently polite, though he can also display a sharp and snarky wit. Having been promoted quickly due to his evident competence and intelligence, he is regarded as a highly capable investigator who prefers to base his conclusions on concrete evidence rather than circumstantial details. He maintains a calm and composed demeanor even in stressful situations, and he is known for being punctual and for having a wide range of investigative resources at his disposal.

Perhaps his most distinctive trait is his inseparable bond with his pet chipmunk, whom he considers his only best friend. He carries the small animal with him everywhere, often keeping it in his jacket pocket or on his shoulder, a habit that others sometimes find unusual. This companion is the sole exception to his otherwise solitary nature, as he is said to have no close friends aside from the chipmunk. He was a schoolmate of Inspector Ninzaburo Shiratori from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, with whom he shares a mild rivalry.

In the story, Ayanokouji plays a key role in a murder case that takes place in Kyoto during a major karuta tournament. He agrees to collaborate with Heiji Hattori and Conan Edogawa to resolve the crime. While he is strict about police procedure and initially cautious about allowing civilians to interfere in an investigation, he is impressed by Conans intelligence and Heijis skills. He comes to trust their abilities, often permitting them to examine crime scenes and pursue leads on their own, an attitude that sets him apart from other police inspectors. Throughout the case, he works alongside other officers, including Kogoro Mori and the Osaka police, to ensure the safety of the tournament participants while uncovering the truth behind the murder.

Ayanokouji has a significant personal motivation connected to a young maiko named Suzu Chika. He is clearly infatuated with her, though it remains unknown if she reciprocates his feelings. He becomes protective and visibly nervous when others, particularly Heiji, show interest in her or attempt to interfere in his personal affairs. This affection provides a more personal stake in the Kyoto cases he handles. Over the course of his appearances, he develops from a movie-exclusive character into a recurring figure in the television series and manga. He shows a growing appreciation for the help he receives from Conan and Heiji, becoming more willing to trust their instincts and grant them access to investigations. His relationship with Conan is one of mutual respect, with the young detective recognizing Ayanokouji as an intelligent officer fully capable of solving cases on his own. While Ayanokouji does not possess any especially unconventional abilities, his sharp deductive reasoning, his extensive network of contacts and staff, and his encyclopedic knowledge of Kyoto and its culture are all notable assets that make him a formidable investigator and a valuable ally.
